I took Fosamax and it started my stomach burning a couple hours after the first pill. I took the 7 day pill for 3 weeks in a row. I haven't tried Actonel or Boniva but they also list GI problems as a major side effect. Has anyone had stomach problems with one of the medications and not other ones? My doctor wants to do a trial of oral Boniva since the insurance company has denied IV Infusions until I try it orally. I don't want to mess up my stomach for 30 days.

taape,
I was on Actonel for a year before the doctor switched me to Forteo. I had no problems with it, but I was very careful to take it as directed. I have seen posts by others who did have problems. It's too bad your insurance won't cover the Boniva IV infusions. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I've been on Actonel since last October and have had no problems with my stomach or esophagus. Oddly enough my gynecologist wanted to start me on Fosamax but when I spoke to my gastro doctor (I have acid reflux) he suggested Actonel. I do follow the directions carefully.

Thanks for the resonses. Sounds like Actonel might have less side effects. Do either of you have bone pain?

I haven't had any bone pain with either Actonel or Forteo. Fortunately, I've had no side effects from either.

Newbones--I was wondering why your dr. switched you to Forteo. Did Actonel not help you at all?

Taape--I had some bone pain for the first month or so but nothing since then and it wasn't a horrible pain--just achy. It only lasted for the first few days after taking the Actonel.

Yes, I already have chronic pain so don't want bone pain also. I'm still searching out options for treatment.

hypatia,
After a year on Actonel my dexa scores were the same; they hadn't gotten worse but they hadn't gotten better either. My spinal T-score was -3.5 and my doctor thought we should pull out the "big guns" to try to increase the bone density.

Thanks Newbones. I've had success with Fosamax for six years now and I keep having the feeling that the next DEXA will finally show it's quit working. So it's good to know there is something else out there.
