View Full Version : Braces at 67?

I'm wondering if there is any easy way of correcting crooked teeth for a 67 year old?

My mother had the most beautiful and straight teeth in the world. I swear they could have used her teeth in adverts. Quite a few years ago she developed a gap between her two front teeth which wasn't a problem, but as time went on, very slowly one of her front teeth began to go forward more and more.

I keep telling her that the dental world has changed a lot in the last decade or so and that they can do amazing things. It's only the one tooth anyway, but she has become self conscious of this.

So i'm wondering whether anybody has heard of any fairly uncomplicated procedure to get that one tooth back in alingment with the other teeth. I highly doubt she would need a mouth full of braces. I'm in the process of getting her to go to a dentist to get a referal to see an orthodontist.

most people don't realize that without continual use of a retainer, teeth will eventually begin to shift, but to answer your question, I would almost guarantee that there is a simple treatment available. Cost i don't know but you are right, dentistry has come a LONG way. All in all, at her age, if it doesn't bother her, then don't worry about it. If it does bother her, ask her if she will be able to tolerate it for the next 40 years. :)

Hi, Here is what happened to me this past 2 weeks. I had developed a gap between my two front teeth over about 6-7 years, it seemed to be getting bigger and bigger and one tooth was starting to look a bit sideways, very slight but odd to me. My dentist hygientist found pockets between my two front teeth, that we didn't know were there. She sent me to a periodontist and he did a surgery there to clean it out. (I do have periodontal disease but had never had surgery in the front) A week later my front tooth gap almost disappeared!

I already had made an appointment for invisalign braces on the top to fix that gap! Now I'm waiting to see if the gap comes back, I'm not sure what I'll do next.

I simply hadn't known there were pockets there or I'd have had the surgery done 6 years ago!

She can check herself if she has pockets. There are these little blue soft pointy things sold in the toothpaste section that are for cleaning your teeth. Get her some and ask her to see if she can find any pockets with them. The first time I did it I was just amazed. The point went in, and in some more, and some more, way up. It was a 6mm pocket, that is over 1/2 inch! The hygientist will do that too, only she uses a metal pointy tool to measure how deep they go. It isn't painful, just a little pressure. Good Luck, I bet the gap bothers her more than she admits.

Thanks for the replies..............She visits a dentist on a regular basis and once went to some sort of specialist (not sure of the correct name) and he did some "extensive" cleaning, which left her with a nasty infection and left her purse a thousand or so dollars lighter!!

The gap never bothered her as such, it was only when the one tooth began to get out of alignment. They say that a gap between the two front teeth indicates you will be rich one day :)
