View Full Version : Bipolar or "Regular" depression?

I'm sure this question has been asked a zillion times, but I'm hearing here that if one is bipolar and takes an SSRI say, they will react badly, so it's not for them.

If one isn't bipolar and took bipolar meds, would the same thing happen? A bad reaction? I'm starting to totally question if I have "regular" depression (seems to coincide with flair ups of physical ailments) or some form of bipolar. I don't get the highs with spending or over working- That is for sure - but I can get pretty badly depressed, crying and no energy to do things. No way of picking myself up by the bootstraps when I feel that way.

Sigh, lots of questions, I know. ANy help is truly appreciated.

It sounds like regular major depression, but it does not mean that it can't change to bipolar in the future. If you start to have highs or extremely irratable moods than you have bipolar. I have regular major depression that is at the tip of changing into manic depression. I get the same way as you do at times. Have you asked your psych about doing shock treatment for you or putting you on meds that are not ssri's? There are many treatments, all you have to do is get your doctor to try and see which one will work for you. If your doctor has tried every antidepressant on the market, then ask him/her about shock treatment (if it is legal where you live).

'Regular' depression is Uni-Polar.

Bi - 2 [extreme's]
Uni - 1 [extreme]

I have wondered the same thing...my counselor thinks im bipolar...my Dr. just writes scripts basicly. I have always been depressed since childhood. Never way happy. If i had mega bucks i might go spend a lot to make my self feel better temp. but i dont. but i do have major anger ever rage type feelings sometimes and she says this is the manic part of my "disease". whatever it is im on wellbutrin 400 mg daily (only the first increase) doc says this will prob double. Klonopin 3 mg.daily, and topamax 100 mg daily. Honestly i feel a little better but with all these meds i think i should feel a lot better. I have 3 children and i feel like a walking zombie and its all i can do to cope what do you guys think ? Deep depression or Bipolar or something else? One of my biggest problems is lack of energy, tired all the time, and can not concentrate, can not do 2 things at once, forgetful. This is very real and i am so miserable. Please anyone who can help e-mail me or reply. I need support. Thanks. Joy
