View Full Version : Plaquenil Side-effect?

In 2000 I was put on Plaquenil. Within a year my periods became pretty much non-existant. If I had one it was just light spotting. I went off Plaquenil in 2002 and my periods came back slowly to normal and then to worse than I had ever had them. In 2004 I went back on Plaquenil and again I noticed my periods dwindled to ...well...I can't recall when my last one was and when they do appear...just light spotting for a day again. I will be 40 this year and menopause runs early in some parts of our family tree and my body had been through tremednous strain since 1999 with several health issues, so I at first thought that could be it. I just was wondering at the timeline of when I am on Plaquenil? Anyone heard of this? Rheumy hasn't.

I Have a girlfriend that takes plaquenil for rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue disease. I recently researched it in a drug reference guide for the side effects of this drug. Among others it lists psychosis, paranoia, mood swings etc. It states that they can occur during long term treatment. Unless I am misinterpreting this, did I read corrrect? These side effects can come on at any time? She is currently having a 'flare up" of her condition and definately needs to go on the prednisone but she has been acting quite odd as of late. I appreciate any help. Thanks

Also, to answer your question about the menstural cycle-she has the same problem, it comes late and doesnt usually last long. It might be related to the meds.
