All the times I've attempted to guit,it was for everyone one else. This time its for me.I've listened to DRs,family, kids, friends.I honestly think the failed attemps was because I wasn't ready or committed to doing it.This has to be for me.I have an auto-immune disease and the smoking has just caused symptoms to get worse. My target date is wensday.I have my mind set and knowing its my decission this time will make it an easier attempt. This attempt is gonna be cold turkey.

I hope you are able to get a good grip on it this time and find something that works to help you. I'm on my 15th day, and not suffering at all, just a tad bit bored without my smoking habit, but am finding alternatives. Do you have any idea of what you will do with all the free time you will have when not smoking?

nuffs3...good for you! I know...I too quit many, many times just to please others..friends, and especially my kids, an uncle who was always on me about it...but it never lasted, even tho a couple of times, I managed to go quite a while. ( 1 year) Now it's been almost 3 years...probably bacause I did it just FOR ME, this time!
Way to go.... just keep real busy...Zeethan is right...you need to plan something else to do to fill that spare time up. We find after we quit, we get very bored, as so much time was wasted on smoking.
Best of luck to you...

Zeethan and Deda,
My children go back to school on wensday.Yea! I plan on cleaning, cleaning and cleaning!!!I am painting there bedrooms.I have so much to keep me busy, that it has been impossible to do with them home.3 teenagers!!! Deda thats great 3 years,Zeethan 15 days you keep going.
I can do it this time ,its what I want.I'm armed this time with strength, will power, and my m&m's.
Plus its not helping the MS,I can't get that under control until the smoking is stopped. My neuro states it isn't the cause of progression,I know it sure isn't helping. At midnight tonight all cigs, ash trays are gone and no smoking signs go on the doors.
I really think its mind over matter.I'm going cold turkey, but have patches as a back up.I don't want to use them,I want to be nicotine free.I really need to gain weight, since the diagnosis of MS,I've lost 16 pounds and really would like to have it back.
Hubby is not looking forward to the mood swings without smoking,I told him this is my decission and just leave me alone.
Thanks for your support.

Sounds like you're on the right track for tomorrow. I'm just on day 2, but for me day 1 is the hardest. I ate lots of carrot sticks, pretzels, goldfish, etc throughout the day to keep me occuppied. You'll figure out what works for you - good luck!

Now you're takin', Toni!! Good idea keeping real busy..cleaning, painting rooms, etc. And when you get done..will you fly over here to CA and help me clean my house?!
Tell you hubby, (even if you have to remind him every day at first)...that you're going to be moody for a while...that's all there is to it....just the way it is...DOES NOT mean that you don't love him, or respect him! Would he rather have a healthier wife...or a REALLLLY sick wife...or no wife, (someday)??? He needs to be patient with you, AND SUPPORT YOU, ALL THE WAY!!
Know what you mean about smoking aggravating a chronic health conidtion....namely, autoimmune problems. I have Hashimoto's, (thyroid), and that is really the primary reason that I quit too. Don't need to make a bad thing even worse. I hope your condition improves as a result of your hard work! I'm bettin' it will.....
Best of luck, Toni....and Congrats to Susan Compton too!

Deda,
I'd love to come to CA,but I think it will take me forever to get mine done.I'm still figuring out how I'm gonna master the stairs going up and down.It ain't a pretty site.I'm 40 and move like I'm 80
Hubby says he's gonna buy me a carton tomorrow,if he does I'll grind them up in the disposal box and all.We had a deal a long time ago,if I guit smoking he had to give up his few beers.I could give crap if he wants his 2 beers a night. Its his liver.
The MS will never go away, its progressive, but I'm smoking way to much 2 paks a day, just to escape the symptoms and pain.Well the symptoms and pain is still there even with smoking. And the nicotine is just adding to it.I have quit before, but started back do to pressure from others, stress, but I have realized this is gonna happen regardless if I'm smoking or not.
Susan ,girl you keep going strong, eat those carrots. You'll make it.
I'm gonna succeed, then I'm making hubby take me on a vacation.:) He just doesn't know it.

Good for you - I too am going cold turkey. Yesterday and today have been the hardest. I know the nicotine is now gone (it's been over 72 hours), but the psychological stuff is amazingly tough. I've been close to throwing in the towel several times - but somehow I'm still hanging in there. Just one hour at a time...good luck!

I'm heading for another flair-up with the MS,All I want to do is sleep.
I've made it 36 hours and no cigs.

sleep sounds good to me - the way I look at it is sleeping gets a lot of hours under the belt without fighting the urget to smoke... Sorry to hear about your MS - try to remain positive (yeah right). Anyway, I'll be thinking of you.

Susan,
Just came from Drs. appointment, the Dr is telling me I'm shocking my system, which is already compromised.I've done nothing but sleep for 2 days and at this rate I'll never get my house work done.He wants me to taper off slowly instead of cold turkey.I told him I'd give it a consideration.

I believe the nic and other chemicals are very powerful. You should listen to your doc - you may be confusing your body and other symptoms are arising. You need to do what's best for you. Did he/she suggest nic replacement? gum or patch? I wonder if that would help. By the way - piss on the house work..........????>> Who cares - this is the most meaningful and important decision in your life and you need to give it proper attention.

Susan,
I have to follow my own instincts,I guess I'll sleep through this and make it through the relapse.I have the patches ,but the adheasives leave blisters on my skin.I am gonna slowly work on this house,I need to get it in order, besides basic cleaning. The Doc said it takes 72 hours to get the nicotine out of my system,I only have about 28 hours to go.

Hey Toni...
I'm working on this house too...ugh! ;) Sometimes just getting it all nice and clean makes us feel better, mentally too.
So, do you intend to stay smoke free, or are you going to follow Dr's line of thinking, by tapering? I sure hope you'll feel better soon Toni. Don't these autoimmune diseases just suck? I hate it! BTW, my best girlfriend's daughter was just dx'd with MS also, just this past Spring...and having a really difficult time...lots of flares. It's so hard,...as she has a fairly new baby to care for as well as a 4 year old..... My heart goes out to you girls. My prayers are with you, Toni.
Hugs...

Deda,
No,I'm not gonna follow his recomendation, this has to be my decission. He isn't right all the time.He is a good guy though.
Yes,auto-immune diseases suck.It kicks us on our butts!!!
My heart brakes for your friend, she has little ones, mine are 20,17,15 and 11.Even at there ages they don't always grasp it.Tomorrow night starts opening football season.2 games a week. The sitting and standing gets meet.Oh,let me throw in 3 cross country meets a week also.
Almost 48 hours smoke free.My neuro's goal for me to smoke free permantly.I beleive its obtainable.
Thanks for the prayers and hugs

Hi Toni...
Yep...the trouble with auto immune diseases is, (it seems) that they are a mystery to the medical establishment...so it's all like a guessing game, because they really know so very little about how to treat them...heck, they don't even know what causes them. So, it is best to follow our own instincts, feminine intuition, etc., a lot of the time.
I have made a lot of decisions on my own too, and deal with it a lot in my own way...and feel I know more about it [sometimes], more so than my Dr's. I learn on a lot on the Net..something they should try doing...keeping up with all the latest information that's coming out. Yep, you're right, it does kick your butt. The fatigue has been one of the hardest things to deal with, besides all of the pain... and other weird symptoms.
And girl...you sure have your hands full....a house full of teenagers! Oh...that must be fun!!:dizzy: It was fun when my 2 were that age....but lots of headaches too!! LOL...oh, and they both ran cross country, like yours do...all through high school. We went to meets often, and just about every Saturday, (hated to get up so early!) LOL It sounds like you have a very busy life, Toni.
Toni, how long have you had the MS? My GF's daughter is on Copaxone.....but hasn't helped her, yet. Yes, ...it's really hard with the 2 little guys, but she has SO much help...lots of relatives helping her with the kids....so thank the Lord for that! I just would like to hear one day that she's [finally] having some improvement.
48 hours smoke free? Great!.....another 24 hours, or so, and it will be OUT of your system....then the healing will begin. I can't help but think it can only make you better. Sure it's a shock to your system, but your body will ease in to it, too.
Have a good night, Toni. :)

Deda,
I think I know more than my Drs..They don't keep up on the times.I called my Dr and ask for a specific blood test.It will tell if I'm in an attack or not?So I go in monday. But he was not aware of the blood test.
I have to make my own decissions when it comes to my care, not only do I have MS,I suffer from failed back surgery syndrome plus I have 4 thoracic disks buldged.I was diagnosed in June -06.But was told in 1998 and ignored the DRs.diagnosis.I didn't walk for 2 years after the back surgeries.I honestly thought the back DR was covering his butt.I am not on any MS meds.I have progressive MS and little is known if meds will help.I'm handling it thru suppliments and symptoms have lessoned ,but always present.
Yes, I keep busy.Teenagers every where,my daughter graduates this year,so we are hopping, she plans on futher education at either the Navy acedamy or Westpoint. So I have been meeting with there personel here at the house. My son, with his football keeps my going,I help at consession stands at Jr. high Freshman and JV games ,with another mother that has MS.We make a good pair, she can't see and I barely walk.
I have 23 hours and the nicotine will be out of my system.I have patches for back up ,I know I'm gonna hit some rough roads ahead. But we all do.I just don't want to get side tracked.I need to do it for me.Plus it will save me money:) .
