I went on actonel a couple of months ago about three months ago.

I have been having a problem with my thumbs, they keep poping, it comes and goes sometimes very painful and then I feel it pop as if it goes back into place and the pain somewhat subsides. Other times I just feel popping throughout the day and not much pain. This has been going on for over about two months now.

I have a friend that is a dental assistant, she had a doctor in her office recently and he was talking to the dentist about actonel. He was talking about a patient having jaw pain. He told the dentist that he thinks this is only the tip of the iceberg, he believes this medication is going to cause many problems for people like that anti inflamatory meds did.

I've always had to have alot of dental work even when I was a kid and I didn't have osteoporosis then. I worry about taking Boniva which my doctor is recommending or any of the other bisphosphonates because of possible jaw necrosis. It is suggested that patients get their dental work done before going on these medications but what if it is needed indefinitely? There's no answers to that. My doctor will not let me remain on Forteo and I'm concerned about not having any treatment.

About your thumbs popping - Do your thumbs get stuck when you bend them? I would make sure that you don't have trigger finger. Do other joints painful since you started the Actonel?

I took Actonel once a week for 6 weeks. It was absolute poison to my body. I now have trigger thumbs/fingers and do believe it is a result of the Actonel even tho it has been a year since I stopped. After stopping Actonel I would wake up at night with fingers in stiff claw fashion, difficult to force losoe and able to use. Actonel definitely affects ligaments. It also caused Plantar Fasciitis in both feet and in sitting bone area. Never had so much bone pain, 2 to 3 different levels of pain all over. The list of ailments caused by Actonel is a mile long for me. I have inflammation all over my body and wonder if it is result of Actonel too. Doctors do not refer to the inflammation as arthritis, just inflammation.

Misty 800,
That's exactly why I'm afraid to take bisphosphonates - bone pain. Your symptoms occurred in only 6 weeks on the medications that's awful. I took 3 weeks of Fosamax and only remember the heart burn because it was so miserable. Do your pains from Actonel still continue today, a year later?

Am so glad I read all this! My doctor wanted me to take Actonel. I finally decided not to after I read up on it. There is a list of antibiotics you are not supposed to take if you are on Actonel. The ONLY antibiotic my immunologist says he has left to give me (I have tons of allergies to antibiotics) is on that list of ones you can't take on Actonel! My gyno is upset with me for refusing the Actonel but I'm more worried about a severe infection I can't fight than I am some bone thinning. I've gone back on my regular calcium and have upped my weight bearing exercise. Don't know what else to do.

Taape,
I have so much pain in my body, not sure what is bone pain and what is inflammation these days. I do still have Plantar Fasciitis in both feet caused by Actonel. I am sure the inflammation in my body is a result of taking Actonel. Strange that doctors never call it arthritis or anything else, just refer to it as inflammation.

Before taking Actonel I was able to get up and down from a chair like a normal person and do whatever I wanted to do, not any more, feel like a real old woman about to crack/break. Actonel prematurely aged me big time. I still look young for my age, but, oh my, what this body feels like inside!

My husband and I agree, I should have never taken Actonel. I can't walk to go shopping like I did before. Have to judge how far it is from the car to the area in a store I need to go and decide whether I can make it back to the car or not. I did resort to getting handicap license plates, it has been over a year and still cannot walk from far out parking places. Have not been able to go on vacation, can't walk or be on feet very long without having to sit down.

I am still drinking Ozarka Spring Water, contains no fluoride. Talked with my orthopedic hand specialist recently about fluoride and he said he is getting literature about fluoride causing damage to older people's bones. He was connected with a very large medical school and stays on the cutting edge of medical things.

Taape, I have read that bisophnates can stay in the body 10-20 years. I sure hope I do not have to suffer side effects that long.

The side effects you got from Actonel sound horrible. I'm determined to get a second opinion on what treatments are available. I really don't want that medication staying in my body for 10-20 years. I hope you do start feeling better.

Misty,
I'm curious about the planter f.....(?) that you have in your feet, probably from the Actonel you said???
I was on Actonel for 15 months, and suffered with bad back pain! Also, my last Dexa Scan said that I went from osteopenia to osteoporosis on the Actonel!! I stopped taking it!!!
My right foot has been killing me-- on the top it aches all of the time!!! I went to an Orthopedist because it bothered me so much! He said it's probably just arthritis and now I take Celebrex for the pain.
What do your feet feel like with this that you have?? Now I'm wondering if my foot pain is from the Actonel???
My gyne last week gave me a pres. for Boniva and I am going to pick it up today. I am scared, though-- how strong is this once a month pill and will it cause even more joint and bone pain than the Actonel????
Thanks,
elphers

elphers,

The foot pain I have is the ligaments on bottom of feet that connect to the heel bone (it is not heel spurs). There is a large ligament at heel bone that fans out to all toes at ball of foot. This ligament supports the foot. The feeling I have is a tight stretched feeling that aches/hurts while sitting or walking and feels inflammed. If you look up Plantar Fasciitis you will see pictures of the facia.

There are ligaments on top of your feet, especially one long one from ankle to end of big toe. This ligament and others raise and lower the foot. It could be inflammed in your case. The huge medical book my internist looked in mentioned "ligaments" as a side affect to Actonel which could mean the ligaments anywhere in the body.

The ligaments on top of my feet are not the primary aching areas, however, I am sure the general tired achy feet includes all ligaments, tendons, connecting tissue, etc. I cannot be on my feet very long at a time.

I do have a gangloin cyst on top of my right foot in area where edge of a pump type shoe land. It flares up off and on. Right now it is killing me. Wearing shoes that do not aggrevate the problem will help in the cyst going away on it's own. I have not had the cyst drained, read it will only come back. I just wait it out in misery for it to clear by itself. Gangloin cysts are very painful, whole top of foot hurts, and can come anywhere there is a bone joint or ligaments.

A ganglion cyst is a tumor or swelling on top of a joint or the covering of a tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). It looks like a sac of liquid (cyst). Inside the cyst is a thick, sticky, clear, colorless, jellylike material. Depending on the size, cysts may feel firm or spongy.

Have you tried wearing New Balance sport shoes (walking shoe) I found one that fits great, just like a glove in the heel/arch area. I also put Dr. Scholl's Gel Arch support inside the shoes. The Gel arch support feels better than the Dr Scholl's foam arch supports, well worth the extra money.

Have you looked up Boniva? Boniva is "ibandronate sodium" , another biophosnate like Fosmax and Actonel. The biophosnates act in the same way and can have same side effects. Boniva is the monthly version. Before you take this, please search for all side effects, what medications are not compatible, which meds you will never be able to take etc., what treatments such as for cancer and others it will interfer with or prevent being able to get treatment.

My choice of fighting osteoporosis is to not drink water with fluroide. Fluoride damages bones in older people. Even children need to be careful with fluoride, easy to get too much. They now have toothpaste for little ones with no fluoride as a safety. They are finally waking up that the wonderful miracle fluoride does cause problems. I drink Ozarka Natural Spring Water that has no detectable fluoride in the natural water and fuoride is not added. I called Ozarka to be sure. Recently discussed fluoride with my orthopedic hand specialist and he said the literature he is getting now has been talking about too much fluoride. I also take Citrical +D and magnesium. Also eat yogurt and choose foods containing calcium. Getting enough sunshine is a help in the body making it's own vitamin D. Only takes 15 minutes a day with exposure of hands, face to be enough. I am not a suntanning person, need to stay out of the sun, but do need some.

I don't think most people have any side effects from Actonel. I have been taking Actonel over 4 years with no problems at all.

Winston55,
I'm glad to hear that you aren't having any side effects. I'm concerned about problems with my stomach with these kind of medications. Can your stomach tolerate the medication just fine?

Taape--Just to add my 2 cents....I have acid reflux and have been taking Actonel since last October with no problems with my stomach or esophagus. I did have minor bone pain for the first few weeks but that's about all.

Same here. I was on actonel for osteopenia know less, (which I now know it is not correct to give these meds for osteopenia) for a short period of time. Foot pain in both feet was pretty severe and is worse sometimes more than other times. I searched online and found some info and decided it was plantar fascitis and I started doing the stretches and bought arch supports. If I do the foot exercises it seems to help some...Whats interesting is that I never had anytype of pain in my life in my feet before Actonel!

Since I posted regarding my thumbs popping and pain. (No, my thumbs don't lock) I started having problems with my stomach last week burning and bloating with gas. It is really uncomfortable and wakes me up at night, I haven't really eaten much everything bothers me.

I stopped the Actonel last Saturday and I am hoping this goes away soon.
