Has anyone experienced any thyroid problems from lithium?
Thank goodness for these boards. Everyone's feedback really helps with ALL my endless questions.

I never had thyroid problems that they would do anything about but I did gain 50 lbs. in 6 months. My weight has always been a issue with me. I never wanted to be heavy/fat. My mom and sister have been all of their lives and I didn't want it. I finally gave my Dr. the choose of taking me off of it or I would stop it myself. He took me off of it. I also had problems with acne all over my body and my hair started falling out really bad. I liked the lithium for what it could do mood wise but I could not handle all of the side effects. To me you shouldn't put someone on meds that well make them feel worse about themselves when they are already fighting bad feeling. My Dr. put me on Neurotin and so far it is doing so much better for me than Lithium ever did. And so far I have had no side effects. And I lost 16 lbs. in the first 2 weeks of being off the Lithium. The other side effects are going away but not as fast as the weight.
Take care and I hope that you have better luck with it than I did.

I was taking 600mg 3 times a day. I was and am so sick of taking meds. When I was taking all of those plus the prozac I wanted to gag everytime.
Take care

Thank you Yvonnel for writing back. I think I'd be sick on that much medicine too.
What are you doing now (if you don't mind me asking)? Are you on anything?
You take care too.

Hi again, I'm the "18+ yrs on 1200 mg./day" female with no thyroid or kidney problems at all so far.
Wanted to add that I take all 4 of my 300 mg capsules/tablets at bedtime. When I started on it back in 1985 the theory was that taking them all at one time gave the kidneys 24 hrs to "rest" before the next dose.
Big plus was that I probably slept through any nausea and didn't have to keep popping a pill thru out the day.
Weight gain - about 30 lbs.
Compared to wild mood swings and an out of control life? Worth it to me.

Hi HoosierBj. Sorry it took so long for me to respond. Ever since I read your post I have started doing what you do (take all the lithium at night). I think it would be easier on the kidneys.
I love your posts!
Thanks!
