I am sure this has been posted before, but I don't want to take the time to look it up- I have stopped taking lithobid and lamictal, (my most current perscriptions,) in an attempt to relieve myself of this mental fog/affectless state I'm in. I've been taking a variety of medications since I was 18, and I'm now 21.
So what are some good vitamins and such that are working for people?

I guess I'm no more able to suggest herbs and natural substances for bi-polar disorder than I would be to tell a Type I Diabetic to quit taking their insulin and try a magnesium tablet instead.
(I've lived with side effects for 18 yrs. It is still better than untreated bi-polar disorder.)
In my opinion!!

There is also a book Depression Free Naturally By Joan Mathews Larson.
I also made a post "Only a Suggestion" if you would like to read it.

There have been studies showing that supplements of the omega fatty acids help bipolar (and other mood disorders, I believe).
On the unscientific side, I do much better when I avoid eating any wheat.
Good luck!

Natural remedies that I know of are - Flax seed oil and a calcium-magnesium combination.
I was diagnosed with bp II June 2000 (I think I was mis-diagnosed)and have been on Lithobid ever since. I'm tired of the foggy, tired, unmotivated "me" I've become so I'm trying to get off Lithobid and try a natural way to manage my BP II.
I'like to hear about others doing the same.

I just recently stopped my meds (lithium and paxil) after 3 months of being on them. For some reason I feel more alive and almost a "closer to home" kind of a feeling, since I think these emtions have sort of become a part of me. The biggest set back is now I have panic attacks, so I was wondering if it is possible to use only tranqulizers or and natural products to eleviate the anxiety but still be able to live with BP. And I bet exercise would help too...
The actress Margot Kidder uses vitamins and diet to treat her BP and she is very happy with the results, I guess she is pretty outspoken about it. We are having good results using them with our son for psychosis, he has not been diagnosed with schizophrenia because we are seeing an orthomolecular psychiatrist and he doesn't see any reason to put a label like that on our son when he is becoming well. It took us about 6 months with our son because we had some setbacks and he wasn't completely cooperative with the diet and part of the vitamins, but he is doing really well now and off medications for almost 4 months. I know it can be done with bipolar, too.

knowledge is the best medicine, if you do not want to take meds then the best chance you have a t fighting or shall we say coping iwth bipolar is knowledge, read up on bipolar (if you havent already) and try to keep a mental journal...(only cause ive seen bipolar people have a hard time in staying routine to a real journal) of all the things that trigger you, depressions, anger, happy, etc. bipolar people are drawn to their triggers, repetitve cycles of people, places and things that set off their mood swings its a hard battle but i would rather have my colorful personality then be a drugged up zombie. good luck
