I was wondering how many other epileptics are sensitive to noise. I particularly hate barking dogs, fireworks, screaming kids etc. Or is my irritability from something else? Any comments?
thanks,

Hi flemmy,
Almost any noise annoys me, even my wife, who has a habit of shutting doors and drawers with more force than is required. She also annoys me because she ALWAYS has the TV blaring even though she isn't in the room. Somehow I find it very annoying though I do manage to keep my comments to myself (not always so easy). I think it could be the keppa I'm on, I would almost prefer that than the thought of me being such a grouch!

I don't know if this is the same type of sensitivity that you are talking about, but things do annoy me. Screaming kids also drive me crazy. Our next door neighbor has a granddaughter that does nothing but scream when she is outside. I don't know if she is hurt or just playing. The screaming is so bad that my parents that live two doors away can hear her!
My boyfriend always has the TV on loud and that annoys me. I'm wondering if he's deaf! Then he gets mad at me when he will ask me a qestion and I can't understand him because the TV is up so loud!
Now he plays drums. He's in the basement when he does this and it puts me right to sleep (I stay up stairs). I don't know if it's just because it's music.
I'm wondering if the noise thing might be more of a "what annoys me" type of thing rather than an actual "noise" thing?

Yes, I have a neighbor with a pool in the backyard and they have a little girl who likes to swim and scream ...all....day...long. I used to love summer, but I actually can't wait 'til they're back in school.
The reason I was thinking it might have something to do with epilepsy is that certain kinds of noises -mainly repetitive stuff- seem to get to me. I don't like flashing lights either, which I believe is a classic for epileptics....

Even though I have hearing damage, I can "tune in" to noises. I don't know if my meds have helped boost my hearing at all.
I can pick apart the noises as I could with music (the training helps) for seperating the instruments on a completed piece with my ears. Use your ears as you do your eyes and "focus".
I'll hear people 3 or 4 units down the hall, or outside with the windows CLOSED. sometimes it's great; otherwise it's a curse and I want to put on the headset's and watch a movie.
I'd hear an electrical hum of transformers sometimes that drove me batty (the emergency light on the back side of my room wall charging!!) Or the Water lines are also about 4 feet from that transformer for the heating system. Drives me batty hearing the pipe water pressure pushing through the wall when trying to sleep.
My nature morning alarm is not yet returning to my window/tree (the large woodpecker) so I'll be waiting for a few weeks until that pair comes back to start pounding on the tree and my feeder like a jackhammer at about 630 AM.

However as for noise bothering me, not really. I work concerts, construction, gas and diesel generators and gear... so no, not really. I lived right off an interstate in a highrise with a rail line. Average db level there on a GOOD day was 76 INSIDE my residence. Rush hour was worse thats when the train was away.

I know what you mean about flashing lights. I also can't look right at disco balls, or strobe lights, they bring on seiz.

I can't stand the sound of flourescent lights- the lights themselves don't bug me, but the buzzing does. Screaming kids- with the parent out-screaming them drives me bats. Cars backfiring. Sirens (weird, because I rarely remember them when I'm hauled off with sirens going - but people would tell me I was), tapping pencils, some bozo who mows the lawn next door (strip mall area) at 11pm on Saturday nights, dripping water.....should I go on !!!:dizzy:  :D :blob_fire

This is weird too because of what you said about sirens and stuff like that. I've got to watch tv to fall asleep. I usually have it on all day long just so there is some background noise in the house. There is one show that drives me crazy, not sure if I'm aloud to say what it is but I'm sure it's one that everyone knows. It was a very popular show about an emergency room in a hospital, it was on at least 10 years ago it comes on in repeats now).
I never really put two and two together but it could be because when I was in the hospital and everything was beeping around me could make me go crazy when that show comes on?

Hmmm... This never occurred to me before, but I am sensitive to noise, and I think it's only been since I started having seizures. I hate it when the TV is loud. my family keeps it at what I feel is blaring, and then they get annoyed when I ask them to turn it down because they say I want it too quiet. I also can't listen to music really loud. It just makes me feel edgy.
But noise like restaraunt noise, and screaming kids and fireworks (well, I hate those REALLy loud ones) don't really bother me. I actualy can tune out screaming kids pretty easily, where other people I know can't stand it.
So I think I have a bit of a sensitivity to noise, but only certain types.
