This is the first time I 've posted on this board. I had a cervical MRI and I'm reading the report and I'm not sure exactly what it means. Maybe someone here knows? It says I have a "hard disc" at C5-C6 with marginal osteophyte and disc material (what is disc material?) causing aquired spinal stenosis and bilateral neural foraminal narrowing to a moderate degree. I'm not sure what a hard disc is and what disc material is. Other than that what I'm getting is that there's a bunch of stuff clogging up my spine and is probably pressing on nerves? Can anyone translate for me??? Thanks!!

Hello CDL-
Those are some new vocab words for me, "Hard disk, and acquired stenosis". Hmmm.... but I do think you have the general idea. Sounds to me like maybe you have a disk that is open and letting out some interior disk material (from what I've read this stuff is very irratating to nerves if it gets on them). Moderate stenosis is never a good thing and that does mean pressure on the nerves that are moving off of the central cord and out to the rest of the body (going through the foraminal canals or spaces). But what your surgeon will make of this report and whether she will concur with the findings is another matter.
I have a neurosurgeon spine specialist treating me for a lumbar spine failed fusion. Now I have a cervical problem as well. My MRI said, "moderate stenosis" and my surgeon disagreed and felt it was mild. So there you have it. Best of luck to you - Suzy-Q

Stenosis is a narrowing of the canal. And when you have stenosis that means that the nerves passing to or from (which ever one) is being closed off and pinched kinda. Anyway not enough room anymore for the nerve to be comfortable. That's where you get the numb legs, hips, foot or arm or which ever nerve is being pinched off. Disk material is the decissation where the fluid and material is lost due to wear & tear on your back, or age, or disease (ex. digenerative joint disease, or degenerative disk disease). Hope that in laymans terms that helps you. Best of Luck:)
