Hi all,
About 3 1/2 weeks ago, the fingers on my right hand went numb (about half way up to the fingertips.) At first thats all it was...I went to the doc who said itw as probably carpal tunnel and gave me a splint. It didnt help at all. Then I went to an orthopedic specialist who said it wasnt carpal tunnel cause all the fingers were affected. He had me do an EMG, which was surprisingly normal. Was done by a resident who said it looked fine. I have a follow up with the orthopedic surgeon on Thursday... My arm is worse. My fingers are still numb and hurt now also. My forearm also gets numb. My shoulder aches as well...The numbness in my fingers doesnt go. Just stays there and sometimes increases. I am confused after the normal EMG... Anyone have any idea what this might be?? It is bothersome cause my job involves typing. I also have some swelling on my palm under the thumb area.

If you are still having the symptoms when you go back to the orthopaedic doctor ask him to do an MRI of your neck. Maybe it is related to your neck instead of your fingers and hand since nerves from your neck run into your fingers, arms, shoulders etc.
Hope this helps!

good advise. i have al the symptoms of CTS but EMG is always negative. i have severe stenosis in my neck along with some buged disks and a bone spur. from what i am told that's where the pain, numbness and tingling is coming from.

Well it sounds a little like it could be compartment syndrome. It wouldn't show up on most imaging tests and has been shown to be associated with things like typing. Swelling, numbness and pain would all be consitent with this.

Hi, I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both wrists caused by typing!
I am not sure what you have, but I can say that you are probably suffering due to RSI!
Have you any form of pain at all?

Hi,
I have some pain in my shoulder and back of neck. The doctor is so annoying. Spends like a minute with me. I mean my fingers have been numb for a month and he acts like its nothing. I had a cervical MRI done saturday and I think the images are uselss cause they couldnt manage to inject me with the contrast dye cause they couldnt find my veins since apparently they are too small! So the images have no contrast and I am afraaid the doc will just ignore it. He was like "Well, if the MRI is fine, than it will probably resolve itself on its own." Whatever. Its been over a month now and if anything its gotten worse. He prescribed me steroids which has done nothing... I will need a second opinion I think

My left hand has done almost the same thing, except my left pinkie is totaly num and the next finger to it only the inside part next to the pinkie is numb as soon as you move to the half way point running up and down the finger its all normal. Now the bottom half of my palm is also numb up to my wrist, I have lost some strength but its mainly cuase i cant feel the pressure im putting on what ever it is im trying move or type ect. This all started about 4 weeks ago with just a tingling feeling, but seems like for now its stopped and isnt geting worse, I got one of those grippers to excersice my fingers .. any thoughts?? Oh im in Iraq and we have no medical here I would have to fly back to the states to get it checked out.

Hello,
I'm a CMT and I sometimes help people wth problems like this that aren't too complicated. You may have scar tissue. That can cause numbness. The scar tissue can block nerves, if it's built up enough. If you have a job that involves typing. it can be possible. Having your arms extended out all day long, can doo a lot of damage to your shoulders and arms. Have you tried chiropractic? There's a way to get rid of scar tissue, if that's the problem.

Krackerr, yours sounds more like Cubital tunnel syndrome, which affects your ulnar nerve and the fingers you are talking about... Treatment could be as simple as splinting for a while...I am going to the doc today for my follow up with MRI results. I hope I get answers cause this is really bothersome.
