View Full Version : Totally New Method To Treat Osteoporosis

There's a new osteoporosis drug in the works - it is different from the parathyroid hormone drugs and from the bisphosphonates. It will be administered via a twice yearly sub-q injection. It is in clinical trials that are comparing its safety and efficacy not only against a placebo but also against the bisphosphonate, Fosamax! That sure beats clinical trials comparing a new med only to a placebo!!!

The name of this drug is denosumab. It targets a protein that acts as the primary signal to promote bone removal. Studies so far indicate denosumab leads to significant improvements in cortical and trabecular bone density, volume and strength.

Thank you Chronie Too! I am here just so frustrated trying to figure out what to do after next month when my doctor won't let me continue on the Forteo. Do you have any more information that you are allowed to post about this? Like how far along the clinical trials are? Thanks

THANK YOU.. I went on the link and read it.
Printed it!
Sounds VERY promiseing.
I like the idea of a shot rather than digesting it.

No Problem... If you Google "Denosumab" there are over 21,000 links/articles on it if you want to read more about it. The only thing I can't find is any hint as to whether the testing will be completed soon. I'm taking Forteo now, but my Dr. is questioning it because of a "slightly" elevated serum inonized calcium level, so who knows if I'll have to look for something other than that to take. I don't want to take biophosphonates anymore.

Good Luck...

I did a little research on this today and found out that it's in stage 3 clinical trials. I don't know how to find out how far along the clinical trial is either. Biut I did find out that it started in May 06 so it could be awhile before it's available for general use if approved. I'll have to find an alternative sooner than this.
