I was wondering if my depression issues could be a result of lack of sleep instead of me being classicaly bipolar. I have read where lack of darkness when falling asleep can lead to an upset mood because even if there is a light as low as a nightlight in the room it can interrupt hormone release in persons (melatonin) and cause depression due to the fact the body's clock is all messed up. One article I read said "quality" darkness is essential to help maintain the bodies clock and prevent cycling. My problem is my ADHD has caused me to leave the TV on at night and maybe that has caused my depression, inadverently.
I inadvertently had a little experiment over the weekend. On Friday night the house I was staying at did not leave the TV on. On Saturday night, the TV was left on and I woke up a depressed mess...I have slept in total darkness, includiing a blindfold the last 3 nights, and I have been fine.
The other reason is I think they may be related is I never go from feeling good to depressed during the day. IF I am going to be depressed, I am going to have to wake up that way..if I am fine in the morning, I am fine the whole day. I sometimes improve from depressed to normal during the day (usually later in the day) but never the reverse. That is why I think it may be related to my sleep patterns...
Anyone else have any similar experiences?
