View Full Version : Worried about Liver Result Test

Just got my test results back for my liver enzymes and my ALK PHOS is 131 and shows the normal to be 30-120. So far I've read that its an indication of liver and/or bone damage. My SGOT & SGPT are normal. The doctor blew it off but I'm totally flipping out. I've been off statins for quite awhile except for a few weeks on Lovastatin and just started back on generic Zocor yesterday as my LDL is high again. Can anyone give me some insight on this? Should I be worried?

My husband had similar high test results many years ago, higher than yours. He underwent many tests and a bone scan. Nothing showed up. A while later he was diagnosed with gluten intolerance and when he went on the gluten free diet, his alkaline phosphatase returned to normal. His malnutrition due to the gluten intolerance gave the abnormal results. You might consider the possiblilty that you are gluten intolerant. Our doctors never thought of it.

I wouldn't be very concerned at this time. Some healthy people fall outside the normal range, but keep a watch to see if it rises over time. With bone cancer or gall bladder disease, the numbers are a lot higher than what you are seeing now.

Do you , by chance, happen to take a medication like Fosamax? It can raise the phosphate level in the blood.

goldenboys,
I wouldn't worry about a 131 alk phos in the presence of normal ALT and AST. It is CLOSE to normal.

My lab uses 125 as a high and another uses 126. Some labs even use 136 or 147. (****pedia calls normal 30-150)

Look for levels of 1000-3000 in liver disease.

Thanks for the responses....I feel ALOT better. My mind was on a whirlwind & was wondering if having a glass of wine every night with my dinner had caused the increase. Not sure but no more wine for me until my next blood test at the end of the month. NHone ... no I do not take Fosamax.
