Well, I got the call from my doctor today. He said out of the 16 eggs they retrieved, 12 fertilized:blob_fire . He said that they recommended leaving out 7 and freezing 5. Of course I guess that is good but after I got off the phone with him I got to thinking. I thought we would wait until day 3 at the transfer to decided on freezing. A friend of my that went thru this 41/2 years ago said that they would not freeze until they see what they have at day 5 the blastocyst stage. It seems as though the more I think I understand this process, the more I get confused. I know that lots of things change over the years and I guess they learn more each day. I trust in my doctor and he is the expert at this so I guess I should not worry. My DH says I talk around in circles and I guess I do. Just wanted some input on what some of you others have done before. This is my first IVF cycle. Does this sound logical and do the numbers sound good? I go for my ET on Friday. Please give me some input. Thanks to all of you. Lisa:wave:

hi Lisa - my RE didn't talk about freezing until the day of ET when we were to decide how many to transfer. however, we only ended up with a total of 6 fertilized, so maybe it makes a difference if you have twice that many!! maybe on the day of transfer, your RE will bring up the question again to see how many of those seven (assuming all look good) will be transferred & how many frozen with the others... ? Can you call the clinic to ask about the process? (I know some clinics aren't as responsive via phone as mine is...).

Either way, 12 is fantastic!! Here's to a great transfer. Lots of sticky baby dust!!! I'll be thinking of you on Friday. :D

Hi Lisa, sorry I don't have any knowledge/experience with this either, so I can't help  . What a trying time this must be for you :dizzy: . I bet it is really exciting too. How do women going through IVF deal with so many emotions at once?? You truly are amazing people! 12 fertilizing sounds great!! I won't be around a computer at all tomorrow, so I wanted to send you some early wishes for an excellent transfer. Enjoy your weekend and take it easy. Lots of sticky sticky dust coming your way!!!

At my clinic, they don't freeze any unless they are at blast. If they never reach blast, then they aren't frozen. But some clinics are different and will decide that they don't want to lose too many before blast and freeze right away. The only issue I see with that is that when you thaw them, they may not make it, and if they do, they may not continue to grow. I think that's why my clinic only freezes the strongest (at day 5) but your clinic may have better technology to handle this delicate issue.

I would think, especially since you are paying for it, (my insurance doesn't pay for freezing but covers everything else, so I'm just assuming yours doesn't either  ), that you could call the shots on this if you request to. Call your clinic and discuss your options! Sometimes new opportunities arise when you ask for it.;)

On another note, 12 fertilizing is awesome!!!:blob_fire :blob_fire I only got 7 to fertilize with both my IVFs and the 2nd time, 21 were ICSI'd. So to have more than half is really great! I am really excited for you and I wish you all the best on a wonderful, uneventful transfer tomorrow!! Good luck!!

hi i know this is all a little late since you were doing this in june but i only discovered this site bout an hour ago looking up something for myself and seen you post up. I had IVF done myself and have a beautiful 9yo boy now. Amazingly through ET i was successful first go mainly due to thinking of it as a trial run i guess. I only have one ovary and the tube is blocked with what i was lead to believe was a noncommunicting horn (second womb not fully grown with no opening to tube, now there unsure if its that or a fibroid) they harvested a record 36 follicles and in those follicles was 31 eggs (i didnt suffer over stimultion according to all tests and was not the least uncomfortable but i went into their record books at sydney IVF lol) We did freeze eggs to try for another baby if that time was not successful or we wanted another but the result back then (7 yrs go) was very dissapointing with no luck. i then went and did another fresh cycle and hit paydirt again unfortuntely i miscarried due to a motherinlaw that was overdemnding even after i had a bleed (just small) . So i guess as far as im concerned a fresh cycle is best and freezing an expensive waste of time though it was 7yrs ago and may better now. Hope you had the same luck I did and good luck for the future    's to watch over and protect you

I just wanted to add to that last thread.

FREEZING IS NOT A WASTE OF TIME!!!!!

My DH and I ttc for 3 years. Did 6 IUI's, I had a LAP, and did one failed fresh IVF cycle, and the Frozen cycle was the only one that took. I am now 35 weeks pregnant. And also to add, a frozen cycle is a 1/4 of the price of a fresh cycle. So i just wanted to throw in my experience. Good luck to you!!!

spice i was really upset when none of my embabies made it too freezing!!! so i kinda wish they did it like ur clinic did, u never knowmaybe they woulda had a chance, instead they let them stay out and im guessing they stopped dividing :( i know frozen has a lower percentage, but at my clinic its pretty high, one women in the drs office i was sitting with was showing me pics of her twins.. she got pregnant with them with her frozen emababies!!! i hope u dont need to use them just yet and this time around will work for u :)

Ok to reply to lparadlse reply to my thread ................

I DID SAY THAT IT WAS 7 YRS AGO AND MAY BE BETTER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im so very glad you had success with a frozen cycle and am terribly sorry that you didnt concieve with your fresh cycle. Are you from australia? My fresh cycle the 2nd time was under $400 and freezing was $600 per year at the time that I was with the pogram so YES at that time fresh was much cheaper than freezing cose then you had to get your green card that cost you more money to even start fresh or frozen.

As I did say though a lot has changed since then.

Good luck hope you have as many sucesses as you want with your IVF everyone deserves to have a child if it is loved and nurtured and wanted.

TerriblyWorried, you did say it was 7 years ago and things have changed. I just wanted to share my positive experience with freezing embryos. I live in New York City and my insurance does not cover IVF. The fresh cycle was close to $16,000 and the frozen was around $4,000. Also to freeze the embryos is around $1,000 a year. So it is defintely worth it to freeze them
b/c the frozen cycle was a quarter of the price. Wow your cycles are so much cheaper!! I hear Australia is so much more far advanced than anywhere in the world. Maybe that's why it is so inexpensive. Sorry for all you had to go through. Thanks for your good wishes!!
