just wondering if anyone has tried to either workout or get involved in some physical activity since being diagnosed with addison's? i was diagnosed with addison's in march of 2005 and everytime i try to do some type of physical activity i notice that i tend to overheat. i drink lots of water before and during my activity but no help. i read somewhere where one man is running marathons with addison. i wonder how he does it. i am presently taking 5mg of prednisone in the am and pm. would going to a natural steroid and taking them more often help me. would appreciate anyone's experience.

I know a gal named Dusty who is running a marathon this Sunday in Idaho. Could this be the one you read about?
There is no "natural" steriod. Unless you mean Cortef or it's generic, hydrocortisone. I use hydrocortisone which is like what a normal body would produce. I don't do well on Cortef, but many do. You are on a "high" dose of prednisone. Unless there is a real need, this could be having a negative effect on you. 7.5mg is considered the max dose. The more we take the harder it is on the bones.
I also tend to heat up. Many of us do. I can last about 30 minutes before heating up & that is just walking around shopping.
I could get you in touch with Dusty if you wanted. Let me know.

I don't have Addisons, but I do have POTS (which has some similar symptoms as addisons) and am not able to work out too much. But I did find that if I drink Pedialyte (the non-flavored one mixed with Crystal Light) or gatorade this helps. I have been doing pilates, yoga and some walking without having too much trouble! Hope this helps a lil!

Just wondering Wanda...what kind of symtoms did you have while on Cortef that made you switch to the generic? I'm currently on Cortef and curious as I'm not feeling as good as I did when I first started on it. Thanks.

thanks for your reply, first of all the marathon runner name was not mentioned but according to the article he/she takes electrolyte stamina tablets to help. have you heard of this tablet? my dosage (prednisone) is high i think due to my weight (250 lbs). if you would ask your friend how she deals with the overheating i would be most appreciative. thanks again for replying.

Cruiser8892,
I just had no energy while taking the Cortef. Spent every afternoon in a chair. I do rest about an hour most days, but with Cortef it was several hours.
When I first started on a replacement I felt really well, but that did not last. I have finally accepted the fact that I will not feel like I did before addisons, but still get allot done. Knowing how much you can do & pacing yourself is most important.
It would be good for you to try hydrocortisone. Just use the same dose. No problem switching from one thing to another.

fernan1,
Here's her reply. Do you take Florinef?
"yep, I do heat up fast and hot during exercise. It makes it easy to run when the temperature is near zero! It’s exceptionally hard for me to run in the heat. I upped my Florinef from .025 to .05 and that seems to be helping. I have to force myself to drink a lot of fluids. As soon as I start running, I have to take off most of my clothes! He should carry water with him in a hydration pack when he runs too."

fernan1,
Dusty also added......
I forgot to add that I add ice cubes to my hydration pack and drink cold fluids after exercise when it’s hot. The cold fluids agree with me and make me more comfortable. Experiment with that one because some people get stomach cramps.
