Leslie,
It takes a few days to a week to get to the point where you can swallow decent. It took a month for this to feel normal for me. Each person is different. Your really early in this. You should see a little improvement each day. If it gets worse then you should call your doctor.

Hi Leslie, I'm a few days short of a month post-op. The swallowing was worst for me (like Dennis) the first few days, and has continued to be a problem. I can swallow puddings, mashed potatoes, etc. fairly easily, but have to work to get anything more solid down. I don't eat anything that's not very soft or easily dissolved by chewing. There seems to be a very wide variety of swallowing experiences; I met a woman in my doc's waiting room who had french toast and bacon for breakfast the morning after her surgery, and I couldn't even swallow my coffee and malto-meal! Some people continue to have problems for weeks, months, or years, but I think for everyone those first few days are the worst. I hope you are swallowing well very soon!
