View Full Version : how do you diagnose pernicious anemia?

Hi

I have Crohn's disease and am anemic on a regular basis. At the moment my ferritin is 13 (range 23-300) and my B12 level is 136 (range 130-1100). I'm a little confused about the different types of anemia.

How do you know if you have pernicious anemia - is there a particular blood test for that? I'm just assuming my levels are low because of the Crohn's.

Thanks

My hematologist did an MMA (methyl malonic acid) test for this. MMA works with B12 to make hemoglobin. If your body is not utilizing B12 properly, your MMA count will be elevated. Sublingual B12 in high doeses will help this (or B12 injections). If you go the pill route, go for the methyl B12 verses the cyanocobalamin if possible. It is easier for your body to use. It is a bit harder to find though. I would tell you where I get mine, but I think that might be a rule violation.

Your ferritin is really low. I suspect you are correct when you say that it is tied to the Chron's which can limit absorbtion of nutreients.
