I have taken this anticonvulsant quite successfully for a number of years but developed severe depression about 18 months ago. So far one SSRI has not worked and one SNRI has not worked either. I don't know what my phsychiatrist is going to prescribe next. To counteract any seizure inducing effects from the anti depressants the pheytoin (dilatin) has been put up to 500mgs. I feel like I'm caught in a revolving door with all these meds, I'm not sure if the dilantin is making things worse depression wise.

I was completely seizure free on 300mg and then I had a GM out of the blue and was put up to 400mgs. Have been seizure free ever since, then the depression hit and was put up to 500mgs 'just in case' and anti depressants. The description of the depression is bang on - up and down like a roller coaster. The SSRI worked for a while then stopped, so changed to an SNRI which also worked for a while and that has stopped. No one's ever bothered to check my pheytoin levels for a while and the psych also never bothered to check up on phenytoin although it's there in my notes. I want to remain seizure free but I hate the depression.

Rivotril is klonopin? Did not know. I took 600mg dilantin daily until I phased it out and 3mcg rivotril. The latter certainly helped and I am still on it, but I am told that it becomes less effective with time. Without doubt, I think the dilantin contributed to depression, along with life and other health conditions. I mentioned in another message that my main issue with dilantin is the high level of interraction with other drugs and the way it is absorbed. Long walks help. kind regards, teddie
