Hi, I have had type 1 diabetes for 27 years. Two months ago I went to my endocrinologist appt. and he told me my urine creatinine was 321. He put me on Altace and acted like I shouldn't have any problems with my kidneys for a few years. Recently I have been nauseated, swelling of my left foot, and some pain in my lower back. I have also had some mild coughing. I was wandering if the coughing can have anything to do with my kidneys and also if I should call my dr about the other problems? The coughing kinda has me worried because I don't smoke and I rarely cough if I get the flu. Another weird problem I have had is itching on the tip of nose. I don't know if that may be a side affect of the Altace.

Urine creatinine is not a great thing to go by. If you have protein in the urine, an Ace inhibitor like your doc prescribed is a good thing. The nausea may be from the drug and the med can be changed.

What you really need to get done is a 24 hour urine test with accompanying blood work. This will give you an idea of where your kidney function is. Also, see about getting in to see a nephrologist. All the studies show that the sooner you get to see one, the better you will do in the long run.

Read my other posts to Cher2005. Those threads will give you some good info about what you are going through.

Good luck.

I am currently undergoing testing for chronic proteinuria. I have been leaking protien over 5 years in the nephrotic range and I think we are going to do a biopsy soon. ACE inhibitors can cause a dry dry cough so its possible its a side effect from your new med.
