I'm surprised the hospital and/or surgeon hasn't given you specific written instructions as to what you can and cannot do. Everyone will have a different answer to your questions because all our docs do things differently. If you have any questions call your doc and insist you talk to someone. It'll help if you have all your questions listed.
In my case I could shower the next day and there was no problem with washing my hair. My main limitation was how much I could lift and certainly not to lift anything heavy over my head.
If in doubt ASK YOUR DOC, he alone can tell you what applies in your case.
Have a safe recovery,
W

I had my ACDF two weeks before you!! :) C5C6 own bone no hardware. Each case is so different. What level(s) did you have done? own bone? cage? ect...
Take it easy is the best advice I can give.
I'm doing pretty good pain wise. My problem is I feel so good I want to do stuff, I know I shouldn't......so I don't.
What did you have done?

I had a C5-C7 ACDF on 5/18/06. I came home 5/20 and took my first quick shower on 5/21. Lifting my arms was no problem - I just had to be sure not to bend my neck (I have shoulder length hair) so I would just stand under the stream and cover my eyes (so no soap would get in my eyes). I showered every other day as it was an ordeal for a while, took a lot out of me, and I felt better knowing one day I didn't have to shower :-) and prepare for the next.

Mine was June 13 and I was told not to lift my arms above my shoulders so I managed "very carefully" to wash my hair in the shower. I also had to wear a collar in the shower!
