As far as I know, they are the both same thing, with identical properties, just with different names.... basically inositol with niacin (vitamin B3.)

Yep,
They are the same thing:
Niacin = nicotinic acid.
(Sounds almost like you'd get it from smoking cigarettes???:D:D:)

Thanks, adec and lenin. Now, another question. Of those who take niacin, what effect has it had on total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides? How much did you take and what form of niacin? How long did it take? Any side effects? Although lab shows no problems with my liver, I do have some family history of liver problems, so Dr. doesn't want me on statins. She has mentioned either niacin or Zetia. Trying to make up my mind.

Bama,
Niacin exerts it's most beneficial effect by appreciably raising HDL levels. There is SOME effect on other components but not comparable to HDL boost.
Try STRAIGHT niacin, nictotinic acid, and see if you can take a 250 mg. tablet...maybe start with HALF a tablet WITH FOOD. They are cheap at the health Food Store...buy for cheapest price. Check for flushing symptoms, itching and burning on torso, neck and face.
BEWARE if you feel your lips or tongue swell...if you do, NEVER take it again.
With luck you will be able to build up to a therapeutic dose of 2,000 mg./day or more, but even 1,000 mg. will help a bit...it's dose dependent.
If you cannot take the straight form because the flush is unbearable, and it CAN be:dizzy: then you can look into a time release formulation which presents more risk of liver damage but causes very little flush.
Try the straight stuff first and see how you do. Several on this board can help from there.

I started out taking 20mg of Lovastatin for my cholersterol. After a couple of months I started having muscle pain. I refused to take it any longer so my DR put me on Niacin, 500mg daily to start with. She has gradually put me up to 2000 mg per day. I am having the same muscle pain, only worse. It is not too bad during the day but when I go to bed my whole body aches. It is like having a toothache or ear ache. I just throb and it is like I can feel each individual muscle in my body hurt. I have another appt next week and she wants to try Lipitor 5mg. My total cholesterol is 203 but I have angina so she is trying to be extremely careful. Has anyone out there had good luck with Lipitor?? I am so tired of this. Thanks for your input!!!

Lucy,
I have had VERY good luck with Lipitor both at 10 mg. and at 20 mg. I;ve taken it every day for 8 years. THe last year I've added 500 mg. Slo-Niacin.
The combination gives me spectacular numbers.
(I had/have angina and have a stent.)
I DO hope it's something you can take. That 5 mg. dose is very small but can be efficacious and you DO need to control your blood lipids better than the general population (or Gen Pop as they would say in OZ...my newest TV preoccupation!:D)
The scary part is that usually if somebody hates ONE statin, they tend to hate them all.
Yes indeed, therapeutic doses of Niacin can be BRUTAL...I could not take 2000 mg/day even if my life depended on it.

hi i'm back- we went on vacation and it was soooo good to be away from doctors and all medical treatments!! Dr checked my husband and gave him a clean bill of health but bc of the leg pain took him off the lipitor and switched him to zetia. he also put him on diovan twice a day. he approved of the fish oil so we're using that now as well. the muscle weakness though has not reaaly improved and he finds he needs to frequent the bathroom quite often-any one know if any of these new drugs might be the culprit? also th md didn't think much of coq10-should we try it any way -he wasn't opposed just not very enthusiastic-and at what dosage? thanks for all your help-you're a great support and it's wonderful to be back in touch! ps it's interesting that niacin causes that hot flush-could that be in iron iv therapy- i get it all the time and it's so painful!

I have never used any of the inositol preps but I can attest first-hand that SLOW RELEASE fromulations of Niacin DO work. Mine is a polygel enclosed particles that I presume dissolve at a slow rate.
Grandkids,
That Diovan will have him urinating more than usual at first, becasue like ALL BP meds, there is a diuretic component of action even if it is peripheral to the main action of the drug. It should taper off once he reaches status quo on his water balance.

I like how declaritively he makes the statement too. But there really aren't any truly definitive studies on the subject... as there are with Niacin alone and its role in reducing cholesterol. Although, he's probably basing his information on that limited Italian study, which showed lackluster results. Still, in theory, he would be more than likely incorrect.
Inositol hexanicotinate (IHN) is nothing more than six molecules of Niacin bound to a central molecule of Inositol. It's a formulation where 17 percent of the Niacin is bound by Inositol.
There also have been a few other studies showing IHN more effective in cholesterol reduction than niacin alone, at much lesser doses. Although, results do seem to vary from patient to patient.

In July 2005, my mom stopped taking Lipitor -- after 2.5 years -- and started taking IHN.... along with psyllium husk and fish oil. Her most recent cholesterol test in July 2006 showed and a slight (yet remarkable) drop in LDL, and a fairly dramatic rise in HDL. To say the least, the doctor was extremely pleased with the results, as were we all.

Thanks y'all for all the replies. I've decided to try the inositol hexaniacinate and work up to 1500 mg. daily. Lenin, your warnings abiut reg. niacin have freaked me out. I can feel my throat closing just thinking about it. Will try this stuff for 3 mos. and then have labs done. Hope it works better than the 20 mg. policosanol I tried for six months only to have TC increase 4 points!
Will post the results for good or ill in Dec.

I was on No Flush Niacin for about 8 months with No flushing of the body" however ,my visit to my Dr. 9-9 -06, I complained of leg nuscles being so tight in my thighs and calves, and his reply surprised me. He said to stop taking niacin because one of the side effects is tightening of these muscle making it painful to the legs. I stopped taking as of this mornig. Will let you know how it works out.
Niacin is as the numerous says -- all the same. Try the No Flush type. Never had a flushing once.
Good luck

I've never heard this. As far as I know, Niacin does not cause muscle pain, although, statin drugs -- such as Lipitor -- most definitely can. That's not to say Niacin is free from any side effects. For instance, as a blood thinner, Niacin can increase the risk of bleeding.... although, the same can be said for aspirin. In therapeutic doses (above 1000-1500mg) there's a potential for the lowering of blood cell count. Also in therapeutic doses, there's a slight potential of liver damage, but again, still far less than with statin drugs. And of course, there are people who have experienced mild to moderate allergic reactions.
