Hello all! I've taken Ativan in the past for my anxiety which works okay for me, but not great. A different doctor prescribed me Xanax which she thinks is better for anxiety. I didn't get the prescription filled yet. I was just wondering if anyone tried both and felt that one works better than the other for them. Thanks!

Hi Smurfy,
I have been on both and they seem to be the same with me. Each person is affected differently by meds though. Only way you will know is to try it. Good luck :)

Xanax has been proven time and time again to be preferable for anxiety, particularly anxiety with a component of panic. That said, many general practitioners and non-psychiatrists like Ativan (and even some psychs) because they believe it has less "addictive potential". If you don't have a propensity for addiction, I would go with the Xanax, it is widely believed to be more effective than Ativan or other benzodiazepines for people with anxiety disorders. People who are simply anxious (but don't have an anxiety disorder---say, someone in the hospital awaiting surgery) will likely be fine with Ativan. Many people have very strong opinions about medication, and that's fine, but it is essential to realize that people will respond differently to meds---especially psychiatric meds, so other people's experiences and even generalizations as I made above, don't necessarily apply to any one individual. Your mileage may vary, as they say! Take care.

Just an FYI for everyone.
If at anytime you have a question posted on this board and you'd like more answers to that question it's fine to "bump" your post at anytime.
But please don't post your questions on someone elses thread, let the starter of the thread get their answers.
Thank you for your cooperation.
