Hi,
Besides my local classified want ads for used autos, vans, pickup trucks, do you have an idea as to where I might purchase a used handicap wheelchair vehicle for sale by owner. These vehicles are pretty expensive brand new. Any idea would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Maybe postings at the local supermarkets or community centers?
These won't be by owner but have you tried -
Checking with local auto dealers in your area - they sometimes can locate used vehicles for sale in surrounding areas and with other dealers as well. Maybe they can help you locate one that meets your needs.
Check Edmunds, NADA and Kelly Blue Book on the internet - they have a used car for sale section.
Also - have you looked into having your vehicle customized - some car manufacturers have special programs for the handicapped - and they are not limited to new cars. Check GM - I think.
Just some thoughts.

Thanks Thelma-Louise,
I appreciate your reponse to my message. I have a 2002 Toyota Camry and was surprised to find that it doesn't have enough metal in the back to hook up a class three hitch. That is what I'm told I'll need.
I've tried my local supermarket but, so far, no live ones sellng what I need.
I've already been checking Edmunds, NADA and Kelly Blue Book on the internet, their used car for sale section that you suggest, to see what some of my vehicle options would cost.
I've looked into the cost to put an electric wheel chair hitch onto the back of a used vehicle from a firm that does that in town.
The dollar signs just keep rolling on. Somehow I deluded myself into oringinally thinking that being somewhat physically challanged isn't much more expensive than my old lifestyle. Boy, did I have a lesson to learn.

Check out on-line shopping stores - somethimes they'll be on sale from estates, or something didn't work out for that individual.
I saw at a parking lot a lady w/MS had a thing called something like a chair topper? She & her DH were at a groc store & this machine looks like a turtle topper - it lifts the folded wheelchair into the topper. BTW she had a sedan.
But, she could move from teh w/c to the car seat and do the reverse.
Look under handicap auto accessories...play around w/the words and see what you find. Don't be too proud, look up used ones...they can be found. The trick is to find something you or a friend can get to to check it all out.
Good luck in the search, keep us up to date.. I'm not to that point yet, but I'm trying to find out what's there...just in case.
Take care

You could search ebay motors for pick up only items in your area. Also, check craigslist online. You can find just about everything there. Search several cities near you because if it's a good deal, it would be worth driving an hour or two.

Hi don'tlikecold,
I've had the flu for a week, so have been a bit out of the loop. Definitely something to be avoided.
Thanks for the information on craigslist. I never heard of that web site. What a nice find. Thank yu so much for sharing it with me. It is something worth following up.
I am still weak from the flu but intend to check into it fully when I can again get out of the house.

Marty

Hi dahlek,
I know I need assistance outside, as if I walk for more than 15 minutes I'm exhausted for the next day. I've changed my mind and decided to get a scooter for the outside. I'll do as much as I can inside, but resting a lot between things I want, or "suggested" that I do inside by my wife. She's good at "suggestions".
Thank you for your input. I'll check them out as soon as I feel better. I'm planning on keeping you guys informed as, maybe my hunt will eventually help someone else down the road.

Just thought I would mention that I came across an ad in today's paper for Accessible Vans & Mobility aka AVMVANS on the web - although they have dealer locations for new and used vehicles in PA,NJ and NY thought it might be worth looking into. Maybe they are aware of other similar dealers in other states. They also adapt existing vehicles and sell scooters and offer financing.

I have been researching folding scooters so we don't have to add a hitch to our car. I have one scooter but it is so difficult for me to take it any where's like flea markets or whatever...so I really wanted to get something I had heard about that folded and was able to be put into the trunk. I found one but unfortunately it is too heavy for me but it may be something you might find appealing. It is called Easy Light Deluxe...weighs 46 lbs and it folds into one piece and fits into your trunk. I found it on the internet on a couple of websites.

Hi Countrykid,
I took your suggestion and checked it out on the internet website. It looks interesting. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Unfortunately, my head is still in a "gray" area as the flu I have hasn't left yet. My thinking is not that clear with this bug having made a home in me. As soon as i feel better, I'll look into it more fully. Right now, with my peripheral neuropathy arm problems, I'm told, as time marches on, will become more advanced, I don't think I'm going to be able to lift the scooter and put it into my trunk. Definitely a "slight" problem. We'll see.
Thanks.

They have motorized folding chair lifts that fit in trunks - I know b/c I have one in my father's old car. Of course, you need a folding scooter as well.

Hi Thelma,
My quest has been put on hold for these items as some other health problems have gotten in the way of me being out and about. Thanks for the idea. I'm going to have to project just how much weight I'm going to be able to lift a year or two from now. My arms are also getting weaker with peripheral neuropathy and none of my doctors want to look at the crystal ball and make projections. So for right now, I'm in a holding pattern. I'll keep the Board apprised of upcoming events.
Enjoy the good life as long as you can, we deserve it.
