Your 4.5 is probably ok but to answer your question, yes. Drinking too much water can lead to a condition known as water intoxication and to a related problem resulting from the dilution of sodium in the body, hyponatremia. Water intoxication and hyponatremia result when a dehydrated person drinks too much water without the accompanying electrolytes. As more water accumulates, the serum sodium concentration drops -- a condition known as hyponatremia.
You are unlikely to suffer from water intoxication, even if you drink a lot of water, as long as you drink over time as opposed to intaking an enormous volume at one time. As a general guideline, most adults need about three quarts of fluid each day. Much of that water comes from food, so 8-12 eight ounce glasses a day is a common recommended intake. You may need more water if the weather is very warm or very dry, if you are exercising, or if you are taking certain medications. The bottom line is this: it's possible to drink too much water, but unless you are running a marathon water intoxication is a very uncommon.

ditto to kmacdona.

If one requires and drinks water all the time because of an unquenchable thirst, something else might be going on.

Some drink water so that they don't have to eat....no food, no nutrients, dysfunctional body can eventually lead to health problems.

Moderation is a good thing.. 8 - 12 seems a good number depending on your activity.

I jsut saw an article about a radio station contest where the contestants had to hold their wee for a Wii - the winner would winthe Nintendo Wii game thingy.
A lady drank a bunch of water and died later as a result. She complained of a headache while driving home fromt eh contest and that was the last they heard from her.
Water lowers your electrolytes, among other things (so can other fluids). So yes, too much water can actually kill you.

You can die from too much of anything, really.

That's why it's called "too much."

Well said!! To much water will flush out much needed electrolytes from the body as well as stated a condition known as hyponatremia. You should be safe consuming 1/2 your body weight in ounces and keep salt in your diet, sea salt is what I use in my water diet

I recently saw an article, as someone mentioned earlier about a girl who died from overconsumption of water, however the article states she may have drank as much as 3-4 gallons and she didn't pee, either. (Part of the contest rules) So that's sort of on a whole other level from what the thread starter is stating is their daily consumption. As far as electrolyte imbalance goes, what sort of things can one do to restore electrolytes? (other than gatorade :) )

To narrow it down, yes there is such a thing as too much water.

4.5 litres is not too much.

dustoffkid,

I think you are safe at what your drinking! But, you can drink too much water and it can lead to death just like the other poster said. It has been all over the tv about that lady but she could not use the restroom, she had to hold it because that was one of the rules of winning. But you would be safe ***!:)

But, how do you know when too much has been too much (before it's too late of course)? I know I have to literally force myself to drink water because I can eat most all day long and not drink a thing and when I do drink, I feel all bloated and sometimes it makes me feel sick.
