Hi All,
I had my surgery Tuesday @ 12:00 pm and was in my room by5:00 pm. My surgery went well, I had no problems with anesthesia and came out of it relatively quick compared to what I have experienced before. No vomiting this time or shaking. Great anesthisologist! He listened to me, and prior to surgery gave me this sour...very, very sour stuff to drink that he said would help with nausea. This is the first time out of about 8 surgeries that I haven't vomited and shaken myself off of the table while coming out of anesthesia. While I was in the recovery room I was actually sitting up, putting my hair back into a neat little ponytail, making myself cough and observing and feeling quite elated that I had not only lived through the surgery, but that I was in extremely good shape.

When I awoke, I was absolutely starving to death and could think of nothing but trying to swallow and food! at about 5:30pm they brought me broth and Jello. At 7:30 they brought me a complete dinner which consisted of a huge enchildada, rice, beans, a large bowl of mixed fruit, a whole wheat roll, dinner salad and juice. I ate the ENTIRE plate of food. Small bites of course, but I actually got it all down and kept it down. I was feeling pretty smug right about then.

I had requested no pain killer in my IV because I was not experiencing any pain except for some pretty bad muscle spasms in my neck and shoulder, and the throat pain. I asked for a Soma instead of morphine and they said they didn't have any on hand, but they would call down to their pharmacy and get some. Well...The Soma never came, and all I received was a Tylenol until 9:00am the next morning. I had been asking all night for something for the spasms, I would have even taken a painkiller in my IV, but it was not to be. Finally when the Intern came in at 5:00 am to check on me he said that he was going to order flexeril instead of Soma. At 7:30 am I ate my entire breakfast, and then I waited, and waited and waited for the muscle relaxant and then finally at 8:15 I complained to a PT that was helping my roomy. I said, "This just isn't fair." I only turned down the IV drugs thinking I'd get a muscle relaxant. She was stunned at what I had told her, that I had received no pain meds and left the room immediately and at 9:00 am is when my nurse finally brought me a Flexeril and a Xanax and apologized. The combination of the two helped just enough so that I was actually able to go to sleep for three hours for the very first time since the surgery the previous day. I need to be more of a squeaky wheel.

Besides the horrendous muscle spasms, the biggest complaint was the sore throat with the lump, but it wasn't bad enough to keep me from eating and I never did choke. I made sure I took the advice of others on this board and chewed, chewed, chewed! With each bite I took several sips of water and managed to consume huge amounts of food before I left that same day at 4:00 pm. BTW...I'm only 5'2" 103 lbs soaking wet.

That was two days ago and I have had to take a total of 5 Soma's, five Xanax and two Norco. My throat is not even an issue anymore, but the muscle spasms in my neck and shoulder make me want to cry. I've been using mostly ice packs, and one time a heating pad. The ice seems to work the best for the spasms at this point. I can't soak in a hot tub, so a heating pad will have to do when I need warmth. I have a hard collar but my Neurosurgeon says I only need to use it when driving in a car, which is okay with me because it makes my spasms worse. I think it might be a bit too tall for my neck.

I think the reality of what I would call a pretty extensive surgery is finally hitting me because I'm not bouncing back like my old self. Reading all of your posts is driving it home to me that this is going to take time, a lot of time to heal, and I just have to learn to sit still and be greatful that everything has gone so well for me.

Thanks everybody for all of your posts that helped me get through this surgery. I was sooooo scared, and those of you that reached out to me really put my mind and ease and gave me some good ideas that I was able to put to good use.

I'll write more later, keep you all updated, and continue reading!

Bye for Now!

I neglected to put in my original post what my procedure was. I had a two level disc removal, fusion with a cage and bone stimulating protein mixed with my own bone shavings. They put in place a titanium plate to finish it up. They also used the screws on the plate to change the curvature of my cervical spine as well as the pie shaped disc wedges to make the curve of my neck normal. Prior to this it had a huge hump going the wrong way. Ouch! Now it looks like a normal cervical spine. The reason I know this is that my Neurosurgeon wheeled over a computer to my bed and logged onto this really cool site that had the pre and post op X-rays. I couldn't believe the change in the shape of my spine.

Bye Again!

Dolly! Wow-you are brave on not taking the pain meds! I took everything they could give and asked for more! My biggest complaint in the hospital was asking for pain meds and it taking 45 minutes for them to arrive. If I asked 45 minutes before they were due I was dismissed with "not yet-we just gave them 3 hours ago". Sometimes it took even longer. I know the nurses were busy but it was terrible. Water took an hour after two reminders. When I had a family member there it was much better-they would get the water, ice chips, crackers,etc....
I am praying you get on the road to your old self soon-you sound very motivated to get better and that is key!!! I am too-I want to get back to where I can go to a movie with my family, sit thru a church service, walk thru a mall. I hate being so limited which motivates my morning walks and following doctors orders. Like everyone else here-I WANT MY LIFE BACK!!!
Blessings,
Michelle

Hi Michelle!
I had a baaaad day today! I took a whole Norco, two soma's and two Xanax and I'm hanging in there. I'm not wearing a collar as my Neurosurgeon says I don't need it unless I'm in a car. That seems to be a point of contention between some Docs and PT's...But...I'm doing what My doc says and not wearing it because I do have the titanium plate and I think they ordered a collar that's too tall. When I have tried to wear it I get major muscle spasms all down the sides and back of my neck. I've been icing a lot and walking around the house a lot and hoping that I will fuse. I know I'm not supposed to move my head forward or backward but I have been turning my head left and right, very gently to relieve some of the spasms. The spasms are the worst part of this for me so far, as they were prior to the discectomies and fusion. I've read that the procedure doesn't always take care of the spasms either so I'm trying to stay really optimistic. It's only been one week and I feel like a caged tiger and cannot wait until one more week when I'm cleared to drive short distances. How far are you in your process?

Diann,

It is pretty common to feel really good after the surgery, particularly if you had pain before. Eventually you come down from that high, and the reality sets in.

Regardless of how good you feel, you should be taking pain medication at regular times (as perscribed). It is very important for the healing process.

It's really great that you are doing so well...but take your meds!

Diann:

I echo what Dennis said....take the meds at regular intervals and overall you'll feel better. Eventually as you heal you can taper yourself off the meds as your pain level decreases.

Hi Dennis & Karin,
The Norco just makes me way too sick. Think I'll have to ask my Doc for something else. Today was better, I took a Soma and a Xanax. See...all of my pain is from muscle spasms and the Norco didn't take away any pain, only made me feel very, very weird and extremely nauseous. I agree that I do need to see if there might be something else than might help with the pain.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Diann...I'm so glad you didn't have the vomiting and swallowing problems! Yeah! I'm now 4 1/2 weeks out, and am starting to venture into eating a few more "normal" foods...soft ones, that is...but things still get stuck! Anyway, I wanted to mention that it might help with your spasms if you take your Soma three times a day. My ns had me start on 3xday muscle relaxers; he wanted me to use flexeril, but it knocks me out too much, so we decided on two Somas spaced out during the day and a flexeril at bedtime (I've been sleeping really well:) ) I just think if you can keep a level of relaxants in your system, you may head off some of the spasms. If most or all of your pain is from spasms, it might make you feel a lot better!
Take it easy with driving...it involves so much head movement! Are you to wear your collar while driving? Is it a hard collar? I've got a Miami J and I would never dream of trying to drive with it on...there's no way I can move my head enough to feel safe. I'm seeing my NS next week, and hope he'll take the collar off...my daughters start ballet classes on the 18th and I want to DRIVE them myself! Can't wait! (My license expired last week, though...guess I'd better get that straightened out first!)
Take care,
Donna

Hi Donna,
What surgery did you have? I haven't driven yet and am not wearing a collar.
