View Full Version : Special Protective Glasses for Severe Dry Eye

I have tried everything for my Severe Dry Eyes, and nothing has worked. I go to an Ophthalmologist, and he isn't helpful at all. He put me on Restasis - 4 months and it hasn't worked.

All I've learned about Severe Dry Eye, I found on the Internet.

Has anyone tried the Panoptyx Glasses? They have foam around the lenses to protect your eyes from wind, dust, air conditioning, etc.

I was surprised to see that Wal-Mart is selling a similar type of Sports Glasses called "Liberty Torque" - they are more comfortable, and cheaper.

They come with sunglass lenses, but they can put in prescription lenses in them.

I am ordering a pair for indoors - with my prescription tri-focal lenses. If they work, I'll order a pair of sunglasses.

For the past two days, I've been wearing protective foam pads around my glasses to fully protect my eyes - and it has been the best two days I've had, so I'm thinking that this is the solution to my problem.

I will not be able to get back to all the things I love - my computer, my Sewing, my Arts and Crafts.

This Dry Eye Problem has been the most frustrating thing I've ever had to deal with.

I do not want to give up, and lay on the bed with warm compresses on my eyes. I have a lot going, and I want to be up and be a part of it,.

Love to hear from others who are considering these type of glasses.

Thank you,
Sue in So. CA:wave:

Hi Sue,
Sorry not to be able to give good news but I’ve found that if you don’t jump on this early and the inflammation cycle starts it’s almost impossible to stop – if you don’t have a lot of inflammation / haven’t had inflammation attacks in the eyes and lots of permanent inflammation pain you are probably still a good chance of bringing it under control. Good Luck – I think I have a really bad case now but I live my life and hold down an intensive computing job with a pack of eye drops a day which is a bit weird and makes your eyelashes fall out / stick together.

Hope this helps – probably not God Bless.

Hi Sue, I read your post on severe dry eye. I am 44, was diagnosed with acute leukemia in 2002, had a bone marrow transplant later that year, and it saved my life so far. However, it came with a high cost - severe side effects, including severe dry eyes. It started about 6 months after my transplant. The side effects are called graft versus host disease. It has turned my life upside down. I have absolutely no tears, zero. My tear glands got damaged in the transplant process. I've done everything possible to alleviate the eye pain.

I use Lacrilube eye gel from 6 - 9 times a day, as a foundation. This replaces the eye's oily, or mucous lubrication. Then after squishing it around, with my eyes closes of course, I then add drops of Refresh Endura. Both of these products are preservative-free, which is recommended for frequent users.

Several months of this frustrating dry eye problem in 2003, made me desperate for help. My Opthalmologist inserted eye plugs into the tear duct drains. It was uncomfortable and tended to come out easily. So because my tear glands are permanently damaged, I had all my tear drains cauterized with a laser. It helped a little to retain the artificial tears I add.

I've tried one drop of Restasis, and in my case, it burned beyond belief for 5 straight days, so needless to say I wouldn't dare try it further. Also tried flaxseed oil capsules, didn't work. I often throughout each day, apply cold, wet cloths to my closed eyes to soothe the terrible burn.

This condition has been completely debilitating for me. I have a pair of Bolle windproof glasses, but they are pretty goofy looking, so I am investigating others like Panoptx. I am sorry to know you have a similiar problem. I hope the condition improves for you. It is an all consuming problem, but I do suggest applying more eye gel every few hours throughout the day, then put drops over that. I am still in misery, but that helps. Make sure you put plenty before going to bed too.

I wish you all the best, and will check out the specs you mentioned from Walmart too.

Please clarify how you are using Flaxseed oil capsules.

Do you take the capsules internally?
or
Are you opening the capsule and using the oil in your eyes.

Your statement "I use flaxseed oil capsuls.." confused me.

Hi, I've been taking fish oil capsules for my dry eye (also good for the heart). Do you know if flaxseed oil capsules offer any benefits that fish oil capsules do not?

I am thinking of getting punctal plugs in my eyes and I just started taking flaxseed oil. How long did you take it before you start noticing and improvement? It is good to find someone with a positive outlook on taking vitamins and supplements, I wasn't really sure about those :)
Thanks!
