I am Bipolar and my P-doc just took me off of Risperdal because it made me too sick to function. She replaced Risperdal with Geodon today. I am now on Remeron, Gabitril, and Geodon. Does anyone know anything about Geodon? What are the side effects and does it make you drowsy? i am really interested in finding out if it helps you lose weight. Remeron made me gain 50 pounds in 2 months so I want to take some weight off. So what are the side effects, does it make you gain weight, and does it help with the Bipolar symptoms?
Thanks in advance.

HI, Im not sure about your other drugs, but IM glad youre not taking risperdal anymore! I had severe side effects from it several years ago and ended up on a heart monitor, with my heart beating an extra 500bpm!. I am having good luck right now with Paxil cr and topamax.Hopefully someone else may be familiar with your meds and able to help.

Hi Missmoody,
Sorry to hear you've had a rough time. I too am bipolar and gained alot of weight on Zyprexa. I've heard other people say they didn't gain any weight.
I was on Geodon for awhile. I'm always reluctant to say it worked well - or it didn't work well, since all of our body chemistries are so different. I know this isn't very helpful, but it's just a thing I have about meds, and giving advice. I thought I did pretty well on it, but everybody that knew me said I acted a little spacey. I dunno, I felt fine. I'm not on it anymore because all of my friends and family made such a big deal out of it. I probably shouldn't have listened but, hind sight is 20/20.
Hope it works for you and don't let people change your mind if you're happy w/it.
Best Wishes,
leppi

Okay, I have been on the Geodon for a week or two now and I hate it. It makes me dizzy but mostly sleepy. I am too sleepy to stay awake during the day and find myself napping. I stopped taking it because it makes me feel like I am high and I am not into that. I guess we will have to try something else.

i take Geodon, only at bedtime, just 40mg. this way it doesn't impact my thinking during the day and I sleep well.

My fiance was on Geodon for a quite some time; his dr took him off of it a few months ago and he just started Risperdal yesterday. He's VERY amused at how it disolves on his tongue. I did hear that Geodon was supposed to be really good.

I did hear that Geodon was supposed to be really good. What do you know about Risperdal ? Is it good ? I read on the little insert that it's rx'd for schiztophrenic (sp?) patients. My fiance's not schitzophrenic. He's got a MASSIVE amount of anxiety and instead of upping his dosage of Xanax, he gave him Risperdal. Any info would be helpful. http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think I'm going to quick taking Geodon tonight, my pdoc is switching me back to Zyprexa. The Geodon is making me depresser and not doing well with the Prozac I started a month ago.

Hi,

I'm glad you're off the risperdal. I'm glad when anyone gets off that stuff. The weight gain is terrible. My son gained so much weight. I got him onto a new antipsychotic called abilify. It's in the same family as the risperdal. I don't think I've seen any side affect on my son yet. I did notice a great improvement in his eating. He is no longer ravenous like before. I could never get him to quit eating. Now he eats more normally. As a matter of fact he has lost about 7 pounds in the three months he's been on it. I'm happy for that.

I can't say that I know anything about geodon other than I've heard it mentioned before.

I hope this helps.

my pdoc confirmed that there is a know interaction with Prozac and Geodon, also with Buspar and Geodon which I was also taking. Solution was to stop the Geodon since I'm no longer manicky and switch to lose dose zyprexa 2.5mg at nite.
