My step-daughter is 1 and a half months old. I think she is Colic. She cries alot for no reason and has alot of gas and does not bowel normally. I havea nephew that was the same way. Itold my boyfriend to tell her mother but the mother says I am wrong. Am i? And if im not what can we do to convince her to get the baby medicine since she is not with us all the time and it needsto be taken care of.

There is so much controvery on colic because there are really no set reasons for it starting up...and no real ways to make it go away other than riding out the storm. Who really knows if you are right or not? Nobody knows.

Being gassy does not necessarily mean colic. Irregular bowel movements does not mean colic. Combination of those together does not mean colic. (Gas drops did not work for me, by the way...but it doesn't hurt to try). Gas and bowel movements get better as the baby gets older.

My DD had colic starting at 4 weeks old...and it magically stopped when she turned 12 weeks old. The only way I really knew and felt okay about it was to take her to the Pediatrician. We talked about what was going on. I was assured DD was not in pain or hurting in any way with all that crying. Serioulsy, going to the Ped was the best thing I did...it made me more sane thru the situation and helped me understand what was going on.

I forget now how many hours a day of continuous crying/screaming the baby does before it's diagnosed as colic...something like 3 hours I think. My DD was screaming continuously from about 11am to 7pm. The only times she didn't cry during the day was when she was on the breast or napping (and she didn't nap much at all). Ugh...I'm getting stressed just thinking about how hard that was. LOL!

There are many methods to help soothe the baby, but none of them are permanent...nor do they work every time. I highly recommend the book "The Happiest Baby on the Block". It definitely helped. It didn't make the colic go away...but it made me feel like I could contribute to helping soothe my baby and take the crying away.

It's definitely up to the baby's mother and father to deal with the situation the way they see fit. My recommendation is to take the baby to the Ped and let a Dr. tell them what's wrong.

i guess her mommy knows her best but i would say that being a mommy lol. maybe it is not colic my ds cried for no reason to but babys do sometimes do this. maybe some gripe water might help if baby has what seems like gas pains.
