Can anyone tell me a little more about this condition? I have had two instances of this in the past three months...
It starts with a shining dot that turns into a glowing jagged ring (looks like a prismatic hollow ameba(spelling optional) ) that over an hours time expands until it goes completely out of my feild of vision and only happens with my left eye. There is no pain at all involved with it, though the first time it happened I really freaked out... the second time it happened I was able to 'enjoy' the light show since the first time didn't kill me:jester: but I would like to know more about this condition.

Yes, I get this very same thing, sometimes with out a headache, sometimes with, right after the zagged arc, has stopped, usually 30 min. exacty. I do get a headache that can last 2 days. Its not severe, but annoying.
When this first started happening to me, it really scared me.

Now I know its just a migraine....
BUT, when it happens when I'm driving, I have to pull over until it stops. I hate that part!

It starts for me, by my feeling as though I can't see properly and then I see the tiny white light, that opens into a larger and larger arc, of zagged geometic shapes (very colorfull). That lasts 30 minutes, and then is gone.....then headache or no headache.

If you are positive it's in one eye only (and sometimes it seems it is until you close the affected eye and realize it's actually in both) then you have a genuine ocular migraine. These are much more rare than a classic migraine aura in that they take place inside the eye itself. A "normal" migraine aura happens in the brain and affects the overall vision (not the eyes per se).
You might be able to get more info by looking up Cleveland Clinic neurologist Mary Ann Mays, M.D.

Oh yeah, you gotta hate it when it starts while you are driving.
I pull into the first public place I see and go into the restroom.
There I have access to cold water and a paper towel.
I place a cold wet paper towel over the eyes to cool them and it helps get rid of the vision obstruction. It really doesn't take too long to clear it up this way.

Lately, of course, there are more air blow dryers than paper towels and because of this I have learned to keep a travel pack of tissue in my purse.

I am positive that it is only in the left eye (did the open one eye at a time thing).

I have had 'normal' migraines in the past (my teen years) that were absolutely horrors with light, sound and smell sensitivity and always happened behind the left eye as well and would end with vomitting after hours or days of "metal striking metal" pounding and unending pain and have even had an ever weirder bout of abdominal migraines (through my 20's) that were terrifying.

If the ocular migraines are all I get now I will gladly take them and leave the others behind... I will just have to keep an 'eye' open for my new triggers and avoid them unless I am really really bored and want a free light show! (no... no medical issue is a laughing matter, but if I am going to have them I might as well find some fun in them, life is too short not to look for the laughter where you can :jester:
