yesterday, Liam and I ran into an old neighbour in the grocery store. It turns out that her son's 4th birthday party was today and she invited Liam to come. The boys were having so much fun, just seeing each other at the store, so I thought it would be a great idea. The party was today at the bowlerama. Oh boy. We walked in the door and Liam made a mad dash to the nearest lane. He grabbed a ball and threw it down the lane where someone was playing. I caught him, and he started screaming. He did not stop, until we left, about 15 minutes later. Everyone stared and pointed, and wispered to each other about how it must be so hard.... I never said a word to ant of the othe parents, and had to restrain him the entire time or else he took off the find the nearest bowling ball to throw. Not to mention that he was covering his ears the entire time. It must have sounded awful to him.

Well, you win some, you lose some.

Not a lot of people can understand the planning and preoccupation that comes w/ autism. Another party disaster, mall disaster, walking down the street disaster, family visit to Grandma's....someone is testing us ALL!!!

I feel your pain...let 'em stare...they don't know the joy a spontaneous hug from your son can bring...Hang in there!!!!

I am sorry the party was so awful for you and Liam. I know exactly how you feel! There are times that I think that my son can handle certain situations and then I find out the hard way that he can't. I absolutely hate when it comes down to having to restrain them. I know how helpless you felt and Liam too. ThreeBoys was right. It is the small gifts like a spontaneous hug that seem to erase the bad times. For me it's when my son says "I love you" without me saying it to him first. Priceless! Keep your head up! ~Jakey
