I have been anemic for about a year and a half now. Today my Ferritin level was down to 1. All the tests show I am anemic and iron deficient. If I take supplements including the SlowFe I get sick to my stomach and usually throw up so it defeats the purpose. I have tried to eat the foods high in iron, but it doesn't seem to be helping at all. I had a complete hysterectomy in March of this year and I thought that would take care of things, but it hasn't. What can I do to keep the iron down or to get it into my system. I have already lost all my front teeth. I am exhausted all the time, but can't sleep because my joints all hurt so much. The only thing I am really hungry for is ice and I crave that constantly, but unless it is totally crushed it will chip my teeth that are left. I get short of breath and look really pale and people keep making comments. I am hypothyroid, but my numbers are good now. It was a little high for a while, but my Synthroid was decreased. I am also a Diabetic, but have been totally diet and exercise controlled for about 3 1/2 years. I do run into low blood sugar once in a while even though I know longer take any medication. I need some help with this problem!

What kind of foods are you eating? How much? I really shouldn't be offering advice here, but I recently found out that I am anemic, my ferritin is a 2..so I have the same issue. In regards to supplements have you tried liquid Floradix? It is available at almost every health food store. That is what I am taking as I have a sensitive system as well. {i am a Vegan} I don't eat meat..But I am trying to incorpotate iron as much as I can in every meal and then some. Hope it helps..Good Luck

Thank you so much. I eat things like raisins, figs, apricots, eggs (the yolk has the iron), whole grain cereal, some meat, but I tend to be more vegetarian. I have not taken the supplement you suggested and I am very thankful for the suggestion. I will go to the health food store today and get some and try it. How do you take it? With food or juice or what? Thanks again.

Your Welcome! I take it on an empty stomch with a little ornage juice (organic) if possible, although it has been forified with vitiamin C already for absorbtion! I had to go to Whole foods today.. do you have one where you live? I also bought some liquid Chlorophyll which I read is good for anemics, great for the blood.. so my 1st day on that. I hope it works for you!!

Thanks for the good information. I will definitely try these things as I have to get the iron in my system some way. Do either of you get numbness and burning pain in your bones? Some nights I only sleep for a couple of hours and then it wakes me up to the point I would like to scream. I get up and try walking it off, but it doesn't work. My doctor also said something about only cooking in cast iron so I will try that as well. Thanks again for the good information. We have a place near by that has natural foods etc. Do you know if Trader Joe's carries any of the things?

I get no numbness or burning at all, at least not yet! Trader Joe's carries a great Balsamic Vinigrette! won't help us with Iron. I don't have one near me..{Trader Joes} ..

I had the same problem with the ferrous sulfate making me sick to my stomach about 6 months ago. My doctor recommended for me to switch to ferrous gluconate which is sold over the counter as well, because it's easier on the stomach. I tried it and for me it was definitely much easier to take. Good Luck!
