I have finally decided to get professional help for my anorexia. Where should I go to get help? Do you think that there are programs/counseling at my local hospital? I don't want to travel really far to some clinic. I would like to stay close and go see a nutritionalist or doctor. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

Hi! First I would just like to say congratulations on your decision to get help. It takes a lot of strength and courage to take that first step. Where to go? My local yellow pages actually has some listings under eating disorders so possibly yours does also. Many hospitals offer programs and support groups as well so that may be another option. Your local counseling center or psychiatry practice most likely has therapists that specialize in eating disorders. All you need to do is specify when you call that you would like to see someone with experience in this area. Hope this helps a little. I am sure there are many other options out there. These are the ones I have found in my experience. Good luck!

Hi Running Queen, local hospitals should have people on staff who are trained in treating eating disorders. Another thing that you can look for are psychiatrists with their own private practices. Do you have your own health insurance or are you on your parents' plan? The reason I'm asking is because counseling for eating disorders is usually covered by most major healthcare providers. If you don't have your own plan, then your will probably have to discuss your situation with your family. Congrats on deciding to go for help; that is a very difficult thing to do.
