Vic, there are lots of posters here who know all about dry eye, so I hope they answer. The fact that you have an allergy makes me think it might be that that is bothering your eyes. There are good prescription eye drops specifically for allergies.
If you can't afford to visit an ophthalmologist, at least see an optometrist and get your eyes checked.
You mentioned clinic doctors, so I'm assuming you don't have a family doctor. A GP could prescribe drops for allergies, if that's what it turns out to be.
