View Full Version : Vision and Pilots....

Hello all,
I'm 17 years old right now, and i've had perfect vision all my life.. until about a year ago. I started to have trouble seeing things far away and its only gotten worse since then. However, it has also been a dream of mine ever since i was young to be an airline pilot one day. I dont have glasses yet (although i need them badly and will have them soon) and i know that pilots are allowed to wear glasses as long as it makes their vision 20/20. My concern is that when i'm 45 years old and my vision worsens i will not be able to correct them to 20/20 with glasses or contacts (and hence not have a job). Is this a valid point or what? Or is it likely that I will still be able to bring my vision to 20/20 with glasses or contacts? Lasik is an option too i guess, but i would like to be able to avoid this as much as possible. Any feedback would help greatly:)

Thanks,
Mike

Your nearsightedness will not likely cause you to have corrected vision that is less than 20/20.
But you may elect to have Lasik surgery or lens implants at some point.
As you approach middle age, your near vision may grow poor.
Possibly at that point, like my father and the main character in the famous novel Silas Marner, your nearsightedness may improve.
