I have white coat hypertension and have been on high blood pressure medication for 3 years. This has recently become and issue because my husband and me would like to TTC. Usually, my blood pressure is quite elevated while in the doctor's office (158/100) but at home it is normal (usually around 120's-130"s/70's-60's). Recently my doctor placed me on Methyldopa for the hbp because it is safe to take in pregnancy. Since taking this medication I have been absolutely exhausted!! I have only been taking 375mg twice a day and my doctor wants me to get up to taking 1000mg a day. With taking methyldopa my blood pressure in the doctor's office is now 146/98 and at home is 110's-120's/60's-70's. My doctor seems to be fixated on the numbers she sees in the office and completely disregards my readings at home. She keeps telling me that if I have a baby with my blood pressure being as high as 146/98 that either me or my baby would die or that I could have seizures. She is now sending me to a specialist who deals with hbp in pregnancy. I am very glad that I seem to be getting good care, but I can't help but wonder if she is over reacting a little bit. Does anyone have any suggestions or thoughts about this situation?

I had white coat hypertension during my pregnancy. I had it up unitl I knew the docs real well, then I had normal range bp. I even had it up until my pregnancy. I just hated going to the docs. Now, it doesn't faze me. I think going through pregnancy and going to the docs so much just gets you over it. I honestly think that they are overreacting to your bp. HOWEVER, I did end up with preeclampsia toward the end of my preg. I had to be induced 2 weeks early b/c of it. So, that said, I would go to the specialist and talk to him seriously. When you get pregnant, I am sure you will be carefully observed. Read up on Pre-eclampsia and you will understand what your doc is talking about, it can be very serious. I am TTC #2, and my last. I want more children, but the probability of me getting preeclampsia again is high, and I want to make sure my children are as healthy and safe as possible, as I am sure you do too. Take care, good luck and I hope you get a BFP soon!

Thanks very much for your reply. I have been reading up on Preeclampsia and do realize that it is a situation that is very scary! I often think too that my blood pressure will end up being normal throughout the pregnancy because I am sure it will be taken so many times I will stop worrying about it. You are right, all I want is to have a safe health pregnancy followed by a healthy baby! I will do whatever it takes to make that happen.
PS - I am very happy everything worked out for you in your first pregnancy. Good luck trying for the second one!
