OK, admittedly a crazy question, but.... I tested recently for total cholesterol at 254. Have been taking 10mg Lipitor daily. Does anyone have any guesses as to how much impact Lipitor might have in two weeks??? I took it once before: tested @ 286 initially, took the same (10mg) dosage for 6 weeks, and then tested at 190 with a good HDL/LDL ratio. Any educated guesses out there??????

Just a guess, but you are probably below 200 total cholesterol right now.

Lenin, here are my results. I tested at 254 2 weeks prior to my work-related screening. I started on 10mg Lipitor immediately...
Total Cholesterol: 182
HDL: 60
Total/HDL Ratio: 3.03
LDL: 96
Triglycerides: 126
Thanks for your help!

subpar,
A very good response and it will probably get even better in a couple more weeks.
I hope you have no problems with it...most people don't.
Just curious,
did it raise your HDL level at all? I got +7 points HDL that I needed VERY badly?

Lenin, don't know. When the nurse called with my results a few weeks ago, she just gave me the TC number. A year ago, I was at 245 TC, 65 HDL, 152 LDL, 140 Triglycerides. So HDL actually is down 5 pts from last year.
Thx again for your help.

What's funny is that (if you believe in numbers) your results were better before you started the medication.

NHone, Obviously my TC is way lower - are you just referring to the change in HDL? I'll get retested in another month or so at my doctor's office. Curious what it'll look like at that point. thx.

Yes, your total cholesterol is lower. However, your ratio was 3.76 before....You have now dropped in HDL. As they are now touting HDL as heart protective....you are going in the wrong direction. (there was nothing wrong with your ratio before....even by their standards)... WIthout a compelete breakdown of HDL it is possible that your HDl while high...could all be bad HDL. Too bad doctors doctors are unable to see the forest for the trees. They keep going along treating numbers with blatant disregard for the underlying cause of heart disease....inflammation. I don't suppose your doctor ever did an Lp(a) or a CRP test?

Nope. What are they? BTW, no history of heart disease in my family whatsoever. My mom did have high blood pressure, however, and apparently had a few TIA's over the years. Thx.

After 2 weeks on the Lipitor, subpar's TC/ HDL ratio dropped to 3.0 (182/60)...this is an improvement on the old ratio. How it can be viewed as the "wrong direction" is beyond me.

From recent reports for people who believe in cholesterol numbers, HDL is said to be very important, more important than LDL....Since the members HDL has gone down I'd say that is in the wrong direction. What was wrong with his ratio before? Nothing by current standards....Doctors have become too focused on numbers. Now they don't even look at them together...they just treat one at a time. I guess some doctors would be happy is your cholesterol was 0, including you LDL......Gee......some of know the consequences.... I still say most people are on the wrong cholesterol numbers train.,..when they should be on the inflammation train. If doctors would take the time to understand bio-chemistry, then maybe, they would understand how the body works.
