Iv'e had acid reflux for five years now, and in those five years I have been complaining about the thick mucus in my throat which always seemed to cut off my airway at night while I was "trying " to sleep. and I would wake up in a panic. It was as though I was drowning in mud. :dizzy: I have been to three different Digestive specilists and they all said the same thing." Yea, its bile...or it's acid from your stomach...but never did anything about it other than give me another P.P.I to try.....Well', I finally went back to my P.C Doctor becasue I was going in circles, and thats when he gave me a percsription for Hyoscyamine....The good news is....the mucus is 99% gone, the bad news is I have severe shortness of breath due to the acid getting into my lungs. There is nothing that can be done for that, but at least I don't have the mucus in my thraot any more... Just thought I'd share with you my little speck of happiness....

Wow, that's interesting. Did the doctor say why that would help with the mucous (my understanding is that's the same as Levsin?)? I also have the very annoying mucous in my throat (although it feels like it's post nasal drip from sinuses) and nothing seems to help. Mind you, I have not started on PPIs yet (other than 4 days on Nexium which was bad news) so maybe that would help?? Any way, very curious about this.

After running some searches on that drug, came up with this precaution.

Precautions: Use with caution in patients with autonomic neuropathy, hyperthyroidism, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension and renal failure. Investigate any tachycardia before giving any anticholinergic drug since they may increase the heart rate. Use with caution in patients with hiatal hernia associated with reflux esophagitis.

Hyoscyamine ( Levesin ) was perscribed for the mucus in my throat due to acid reflux, which is really bad. ( I take three Nexiums a day ) It seems to help, but I also have swollen and infected tonsils which aggravates it even more.( I am scared to have my tonsils removed becasue of my age ) The RX on Hyoscyamine says : it is used to control symptoms associated with disorders of the gastrointestional ( GI ) tract. It works by desreasing the motion of the stomach and intestions and the secretion of stomach fluids, including acid This drug acts on the muscle in the wall of the gut and also the urinary bladder. It relaxes the muscle and prevents spasms from occuring. It also can slightly reduce the production of stomach acid. With this drug the following disorders may be a problem : glaucoma, prostate enlargment, hypertension, congestive heart failure, severe ulcerative colitis. So far I don't have any reaction to it, but then it's only been a week. I have noticed that my belching has slowed way down too.
