ShanaLeigh 09-25-2006, 03:56 PM Are crib bumpers safe to use? My ds is 4&1/2 months and we are finally taking him from his bassinet to his crib, and I am wondering if we should use the bumpers or not. I'm just concerned about him smooshing his lil face up against it and not being able to breathe.
Also, at what age are stuffed animals and other fluffy things ok for baby to sleep with? My lil one just loves to sleep with his frog, but we take it away from him after he falls asleep.
Thanks so much:angel:
weepyone 09-25-2006, 04:18 PM there is so much conflicting info on bumpers, but ds does have one at the top end of his cot but then again his feet are at the bottom so the bumper is a long way up away from him. i guess as soon as he starts to move around mor e in his cot i will take it out. saying that he is in baby sleeping bags so i don't think he will move far in his cot any time soon.
Gayle0000 09-25-2006, 04:23 PM There are a lot of different opinions on this one, but I had the bumpers in the crib from day 1. I moved DD from her bassinet into the crib at 2 months old. I never had a problem because DD never really did roll over as a little baby.
She didn't start rolling in her crib until she was about 8 months old.
She's a year old now and I still have the bumpers in. I'm actually thinking of taking them out...not for suffocating...but make changing the sheets 1 less step.
As for stuffed animals...same as above. I've always had a couple in there & she never rolled around or bothered them. She didn't get attached to her bunny for sleeping until she was 6-7 months old...and we let her sleep cuddled to her bunny. It soothed her.
Now at a year old, the animals are in there for her to play with when she wakes up...and she definitely loves playing with them.
debating 09-25-2006, 06:16 PM Nope, we don't use bumpers. They never did tie right (the ties weren't lined up with the bars) so there was always gaps in it. Plus she liked to roll ever and grab them. Maybe it was because mine didn't fit the crib well, but it seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. No toys either. And I'm taking the mobile out this week too. Now that she is grabbing things to pull her self up, it's safer without this stuff.
sdjansen 09-25-2006, 09:11 PM I used them from day one, DS has always slept in his crib, he hated the co sleeper for some reason. Anyways he loved them, he used to roll to his side and grab them and use them as a pillow. I just took them out last week and DS is almost 15 months old. I took them out because I was worried he was going to try and use it as a step to get out. I read on this board once that people have intertwined them in and out of the crib rails and they fit better. Mine always seemed to fit fine.

I always thought that defeated the purpose of it being a bumper pad if half the rods are exposed for them to bang their heads on.
She doesn't sleep in her crib very often, but now that she is old enough to be aware of her surroundings, I think it's better that she learns not to bang her head against the crib anyway. Maybe it's different when a newborn sleeps in there, but I have no idea about that.
My problem isn’t ds bumping his head. He is starting to get his leg underneath the pad and sticking it out of the bars. That freaks me out. I’m afraid he’s going to break his leg or something. Maybe I’ll try intertwining the bumper pad. Thanks for the tip!
j baby 09-26-2006, 02:18 PM i have a bumper pad in DS crib, but i guess you could say it's only for decorative purposes because he never sleeps in his crib, not even for naps. still, if he did sleep in his crib, i would leave it in there. i don't see him killing himself on the bumper pad, and besides it matches the curtains.
Jordyn 09-26-2006, 03:04 PM I asked about bumpers once ds started to rolll at 7-8 months (ds had a gross motor delay as an infant so we saw our paed and a physiotherapist often). Both told me that once they can start rolling easily from front to back and back again that bumpers are fine because they are then able to roll away if breathing becomes an issue. Ds was forever waking me up because he'd bumped his head through the night. Like North, I wanted him to learn on his own to stop this but that never happened and since I had to be up early in the morning to go to work, I chose this route. Not sure he's ever learned this lesson either as we often hear banging coming from his room at night and he's over 3 now!!!
Maxx09 09-26-2006, 03:11 PM I used bumpers with all three of my babies. Not only can they bang their little heads, but like someone else said, getting their little arms and legs stuck is an issue too. I used side sleepers with all of mine until they got too big(yes I know-now they say backsleeping now but it has changed 100s of times since I started having kids:dizzy: ) Once again, it's your personal choice but I personaly have never heard a bad thing about bumpers.

I've used a sleep positioner since she was born, so maybe you could try one of those. It keeps her in the center of the crib, and now that she can roll over, it stops her from rolling over and waking herself up (which requires me to go and flip her back over).

My sleep positioner says not to use over 15 lbs. I tried it anyways and he can roll over the wall part
I was dead set against using a bumper until I saw the post about intertwining it. I did that and now I don't find his legs stuck in the bars. That scares me when it happens
sobannon 09-27-2006, 10:29 AM My little man has scooted in the bed since he ws 3 months old. He scoots and scoots until his little head is wedged in the corner of the bed. No matter how many times I move him, he always seems to make his way back. My little one is/was a tummy sleeper (I know, I know), he was a preemie and came home on the apnea monitor and refused to change his NICU ways once he got home. If I didn't use bumpers, Dalton would have rail marks on his little skull....lol :)

Mine isn't like the type that is a separate pad that lays inside the crib. It's just two big bolsters connected with a piece of cloth. I can't see how an age requirement would suddenly make it unsafe. Wierd. If I have the width adjusted on it (the connecting fabric has velcro on it to make it adjustable) then she cannot roll out of it.

Mine is the same kind.. It's white and has a triangle attached at one side, and the other has velcro.. I think it has red writing on it somewhere. No matter how I adjust the width he still gets out of it, I'll find him on the other side of his bed sleeping soundly on his stomach  I don't think the weight limit on the box is so much a safety issue, but at that point a 15lb baby is big enough to get out of it? Hmm not sure.. All I know is my son doesn't stay in them!
ShanaLeigh 09-30-2006, 07:33 PM Thanks for all the replies ladies! I can see there are a lot of different opinions on this, and I'll just have to go with my gut! :)
