well i had my biopsy of the swollen lymph node in my neck today. it was acutally a FNA. the lab cytologist was in the room the whole time and the each time the doctor got a sample from the node, he would take it over to her and she would make a slide to see if there were enough cells for a good reading. it took the doctor 3 tries (and 3 needle sticks!) to get a good sample. i then sat in the room and waited for preliminary results.... the cytologist went down to the lab to the pathologist who read the slide and gave a preliminary result...it looks like it is BENIGN! the pathologist said the cells were "mixed lymphocytes" (which i am assuming to be found in lymph nodes normally). they still have to review the slide in detail and print out a detailed pathology report. but it sounds like the initial report was good news. i have to go back to the doctor in 8 weeks for a follow up visit. and i am forbidden from touching the node!! oh, and by the way... . my md did not want to do an excicional biopsy of the node unless absolutly necessary because it is sitting very close to my carotid artery.
