Not sure I have spelled this right but it can be a cause of HBP. I know it is a 24 hour urine test and can be caused by pheo's in different parts of the body. Just wondered if anyone has had any experience with this disease.

I had a pheo removed in 2000. I didnt know what was wrong with me for a long time. High blood pressure, fast heart rate. I thought I was going crazy. I had pain in my stomach area and dr took an ultra sound and that is whent hey found the pheo. Good luck to you

When first diagnosed with hypertension I was urine tested (collect a bottle for 24 hours) for vaniilymandelic acid and 5-HIAA...these are markers for pheochromocytoma and for an adrenal tumour producing catecholemines. Both tests were negative, which I guess is the case for most people.

Good to have the tests though

Well, they have run out of tests and since my BP went up and down so fast(in minutes) we have come to the decision that I was having muscle spasms probably from extensive work I had been doing on house where I had to use back, neck and arms overhead for long periods of time. I am 70 years old and I guess I over did it. Once I started taking Advil(my idea) to get what I thought might be inflammation down I started with some shoulder pain and pain in different parts of head. Now it is all gone and so are the spikes. We hope. My body feels like it has some flexability again. As usual what I had is not the norm but I certainly have had all the tests there are. I was scheduled for an MRI of head but will wait to seee if all is well. Also given Neuontin to calm nerve endings but haven't take yet. Just keeping my fingers crossed for now that this is over. BP is running about 130/80 with 10mg of Lisinipril

I have had the test twice, both times results were negative, but I am being sent now for a CT scan of the adrenal glands. Both 24-hour urine collections I had were in periods in which I had no BP spikes.

I insisted on being tested when I first discovered my hypertension. I"m 34 and was not about to accept the 90% essential hypertension speech from the dr. I do realize that most cases of hypertension are unable to be pinpointed to a specific cause, but I thought it would be stupid not to rule out things like a pheocrycytoma. Turns out I didn't have one and I am hoping to make some serious changes to lifestyle and my goal is to be off meds with in the next year. I've seen a lot and although conventional medicine and drugs have their place in helping they also can do a lot more damage, so if natural can work, it's worth a try.
