i have been dieting for four years and i have lost over fifty pounds. i went from 183 to 130. well, now i have *stopped* dieting, because i haven't gotten my period for two weeks. i still don't eat very much, but i eat all kinds of foods. still haven't gotten my period. im still hungry a lot of the time. anybody got a clue as to what is going on? i certainly didn't think i had an eating disorder.

It could be more that your body has gone through a lot of stress from losing so much weight. How long did you lose it in? If you lost weight really fast it could be that, too. Or it could be that you aren't getting enough of something. Make sure that you are getting at least 15% calories from fat because too low of a fat intake can stop your period. One other possibility is that you are exercising too hard. How long do you work out each day? Are you careful to take two days a week off to give your body a rest? Not getting your period leads to osteoperosis in older age among other things, so the sooner you can figure out what's going wrong to make your body do this and fix the problem, the more healthy you will be.

thanks for the response..
it took me four years to lose all that weight. i exercise once a week. i just moved to college, and got sick last week, so i think it might be wrapped up with that, but everybody (all my friends up here) insist it is because i diet so heavily

Hi Diana,
It could be a mixture of factors as to why you haven't had your period. Stress and change can also affect your cycle. I haven't had a period lately for the last 2 months due to weight loss and stress. Any change like having exams, too much on at work etc seems to affect my period and I have often missed them for this reason even at a healthy weight. What sort of things do you eat and do you exercise? Don't worry too much about this it just moniter it and try to eat a balanced diet. Good luck with everything.

hey thanx for responding,
i talked with my mom about it, and she assured me that because i was recently sick, and had quite a few exams, a new living environment, and a new diet will ALL contribute to me not having a period. so i guess its ok this time, i am just usually so regular. i eat very balanced, and exercise once a week.
