Things I have learned in the past couple weeks:
1. Never, ever, ever, EVER hook up with a friend's ex, under ANY circumstances, what-so-EVER. Things can turn ugly by ways of which you never would have conceived.
2. Never, ever, ever, EVER hook up with the ex of someone with whom you used to be very close friends even though lately you've drifted apart somewhat. Same reason as above.
3. Treasure old friends who have seen you through your ups and downs (very far downs) but have, for some crazy reason, decided to stick by you through it all. These benevolent souls will save your life and fill it with color. (I know this one's cliche, but it's cliche for a reason; it's so true.)
4. Don't underestimate the way sleep can improve your perspective on even the worst situations. (But don't overestimate it either. Your problems will still be there to deal with when you wake up; only difference will be your preparedness to deal with them.)
5. To thine own self be true. Always and forever. Some people will hate you for being you. That is their problem; don't let it be yours. (Way easier said than done, of course.)
I think the only way to become wise is to do lots of foolish things first.
