Has anyone taken narcotics during pregnancy? My neurologist said that if I want to get pregnant she will take me off neurontin and give me narcotics during the pregnancy. She said it's completely safe.

I have questions!

1) Has anyone done this?
2) How was the pain control?
3) Could you function at work on narcotics? Drive a car? etc
4) Has anyone heard anything from reliable sources claiming narcotics during pregnacy is UNsafe?

Hi,

Maybe you should discuss this with your Ob/Gyn to see what he/she says. Narcotic use can cause serious risks for the baby and can even lead to miscarriage or still born death. Narcotics do cross into the placenta. I would think that the Ob/Gyn (after consulting the neuro) should be the one to decide if benefits outweigh the risks.

But, I was in a car accident when I was 8 months pregnant and broke my ribs. As my daughter was pressing right on them, this gave me considerable pain. The doctor prescribed Tylenol #3 and this did not cause any problems but I only took them for a week, not long term.
