I am taking Yaz right now for the past 7 months and have really had good experiences with it (weight loss, no acne, light periods). Except... I noticed my hair has started falling out!!! I know that this BC (almost the same as Yasmin) has spiro that helps promote hair growth. So, I'm not sure what's going on. I haven't been on BC for 6 years, so I want to switch to something else, but I'm scared my hair will fall out due to the hormonal change of the pills.
Can you ladies list the birth control pills you have taken that have caused hair to thin/fall out? I want to avoid all of the major hairloss pills!! I'm only 26 and have never had a problem with my hair before. HELP!!!!!

It could be that your body needs a higher level of estrogen. Yaz has a very low dose of estrogen (lower than yasmin). Estrogen defieciency can cause hair thinning, which is why many women going through menopause start to notice thinning hair - because their estrogen levels are dropping. If you are thin, there is more of a chance that you may be lacking sufficient estrogen levels. Do you have any trouble with spotting in between periods? That can also be a sign of low estrogen. You may want to ask your doctor what he or she recommends. Each person's body chemistry is different and you have to find out what works best with yours. Best wishes to you.

Fairest44,
I had a horrible experience with Estrostep FE a few years back. It's a triphasic pill - different hormone levels each week. I've always had thick hair so I didn't notice any thinning right away. But, after two years on it, my hair was quite thin. Then I stopped taking it and the shed slowed way down. I've done some research since then and have read that birth control pills deplete zinc (along with many other vitamins and minerals). A zinc deficiency can cause hair loss. So, maybe take extra zinc with your next pill. Also, ask for a pill that's low in androgens. Androgens are male hormones that cause hair loss in some people.

i don't know this for sure, but my mother said when you are pregnant it causes you to lose your hair. birth control tricks your body into thinking it's pregnant so it won't drop any eggs and actually keep you from getting pregnant... so that is probably why we experience hair loss.
