Hi,
There was recently a TV documentary in the UK about BP. A psychiatrist was featured giving his words on the illness and an insight into a psychiatric hospital ward.

On another board, hosted by the BBC, I found that this psychiatrist had written...
I was one of the shrinks who took part in the programme'....

I am absoutely flabbergasted to hear a psychiatrist of the 21st cetury describing himself as a shrink!!!! Horrified!!!! My consultant psychiatrist would never dream of using the word. What does he think he is doing with regards to the 'stigma' associated with mental health by using terms of Freudian times?

I can't believe that a 'professional' would use such santcimonious language.

Disgusted!!!!

Hi Nutshell
What documentary was it- was it the Stephen Fry one?
Ive gotta agree that was a pretty unprofessional thing for someone who is supposedly a psychiatrist position to say

Hi Fallen angel,
Yes - it was on the BBC BP message board. I too find it extemely unprofessional. I've posted on the BBC's board about it and am getting slated to bits for it... :blob_fire

Hope ur ok,
Nut.

I'm going to have to re-educate myself on what the "shrink" in psychiatry refers to... I always thought of it as a slang term, kind of like a surgeon referring to himself as "sawbones".

That's what I thought, too, Ruth. To tell you the truth, I can't make the connection between the word "shrink" and being a psychiatrist. Does it mean brain shrinker or something like that? Still doesn't make much sense.
