I don't understand your question about sexual stimulation in that area.
If you have a hemmroidectomy, believe me sex will be the last thing on your mind..
At least for a few weeks.
That is if it is anything like my surgery. I had external H, tomorrow will be 6 weeks and it still hurts a little and today had some blood.

I had my hemorrhoidectomy on Sept 22. I feel the same way as you do. I have 3 children and want to be there for them but my healing has been very difficult too. I had 3 large hemorrhoids removed and the healing is not going as fast as my surgeon said it would. I am not sure I am happy with how it is healing too. I have been afraid to eat too much as I know that it all has to eventually come back out. I guess we just need to stay strong and pray for fast healing.

Well gals, I am 4 months post hemorrhoidectomy...had 4 internal and fissure inside...they were "diced- fried_ chopped and sodered" it felt like..they used a new instrument called a "Harmonic Scalpel" which does al this removal process and supposed to not leave as much scar tissue after...well..let me tell you..
I still have pain..oh..nothing like the 1st 2 months..the rectal spasms are what you are feeling..the sphincter muscle ..what holds the BM inside you..just goes into a spasm when you try to pass any stool..that lasted a good 2 months..and they gave me muscle relaxants..not pain pills..which often make you more constipated..but muscle relaxers..and they helped alot..but you had to have a "HOT" bathtub ready and the muscle relaxants in your system..BEFORE you sat on the pot....
Now after 4 months..I still have problems with motility..need to take Mineral oil as a stimulant..that works better than any Colace or laxative..nasty to take..but 3-4 Tablespoons before bed..and it works like a charm...and CHEAP..!!!
Also surgeon recommended Flax Seed Oil...and I am still taking that..the oil itself gagged me..but taking the capsules and it seems to make things slide out easier..and lots and lots and lots of water..
Advil 600mg also seems to help during the day if the spasms keep up and you need to keep your mind alert for work...
Hope this helps someone..it sure helped me and sit in as hot of water and as often as you can and soak your butt..
Keep those stools loose..only way to get thru this without causing the strain that creates new hemorrhoids..

4 months and you still are in pain??? This surgery has got to be one of the worst. I was doing the mineral oil too but from everything I've read it is not good to be on for an extended period of time so I stopped that after 2 weeks. Do you have any burning after a stool? I find that it is just horrible after I have had a BM and it lasts at least half the day. However, I find soaking in a tub doesn't really help me that much. I think some people on the other hemorrhoidectomy board said that soaking too much in a tub can hurt the healing process. Do you have any suggestions as what to do about the burning feeling? I would appreciate any help from anybody that has had this surgery.
Thanks!

I had 3 procedures in 18 days. I started with some really bad hemorrhoids that I just couldn't get to stay inside, and there was a lot of bleeding by the end of September. By Monday October 1st I couldn't take it anymore and I went to Urgent Care where the doctor lanced and drained the hemorrhoids with some local anesthetic. He also stuffed them back in. The following day I October 2, I saw a colorectal surgeon who told me he wanted to try 2-3 months of change of diet, with the additions of a stool softner and Metamucil. Unfortunately, he did a rectal exam which reflared up the hemorrhoids. By the next morning they were back out and I was in more pain than ever. I was back in the surgeon's office by 10:00 a.m. and he performed a hemorrhoidectomy right there in his office. The first BM after that took we about 12 hours to recover from. I was taking 2 Vicodine every 4-6 hours and not much relief. The sitz baths and everything else. The really bad thing is that by the morning after the surgery, I had huge hemorrhoids again. My husband called the surgeon and he said it was just swelling from the surgery. So I didn't touch anything and went back to work 5 days later. When I went to my post-op office visit on October 11, 2006, the doctor took one look and said they were hemorrhoids on the opposite side of where he had performed the surgery, he had never seen anything like this and that I needed another surgery. I tried to be brave, when I just wanted to cry. I agreed to another surgery but only by being put to sleep for the procedure. I could not stand the thought of being awake and undergoing all those shots done there. So, 2 days later, October Friday the 13th, I went into a surgery again for the 3rd procedure. This time the recovery is much worse since 270 degrees of my anus is cut and sutured. During my first 10 days of recovery I found healthboards from this site that started in 2003 and ended in December of 2005. The persons that had undergone hemorrhoidectomies gave some good insight into our problems and things that had helped them. Check out this forum if you can. One good point which I just started doing was a blob of Vaseline on the anus and a tiny bit inside right before the BM. That is supposed to lubricate and protect the skin from so much burning. I went out in the car for the firm time yesterday and I could only handle an hour. Mornings are the worst, and burning pain after a BM can take hours to go away. Unfortunately, between the 3 procedures I have taken 11 days off work and I need to go back tomorrow, armed with a very soft cushion, and will try to sit in front of the computer as much as possible, and get and walk around when necessary. My biggest fear is that I will have to have a bm at work.

sarab,
The thread you mentioned is a Sticky Thread at the top of this Page -- Hemorrhoidectomy Blues -- started by Tammynoska it lasted almost 2 years about hemorrhoid surgery recovery.

As you know it's alot of pain!!

I wish you well~~~Harry

Wow SaraB524, it sounds like you went through a lot. I wish you fast healing. I had 3 hemorrhoids removed. I had my procedure a month ago and still do not feel very great. I cannot imagine going and sitting at work. How is that going? However, I am a stay-at-home mom so I am basically at work too. One point I wanted to make to you was that if you read one of the last few pages of the sticky hemorrhoidectomy thread, Tammynoska replied back that the vaseline had been doing her a disservice and was causing some of her healing problems. You may want to check that out.

Harry, did you have a hemorrhoidectomy too? How long was your healing time? What is your thoughts on the vaseline? How long did you bleed with a BM because I am still experiencing some bleeding at 1 month. Is that normal?

Harry

ericollin,

I had a hemorrhoidectomy done about 36 years ago and I will never forget the pain. My first BM was like I was passing broken glass but It got better. It was done very much different then. You were shaved clean both back and front -- from waist to the knees and with the hair growing out after surgery it presented another itchy problem.

I called the surgeon and threatened him physically for putting me through so much pain w/o adequate pain medication after getting out of the hospital.

Now you have the internet and can get support and share and find out what others are doing --- take a water fiber supplement and a stool softener and use an ointment. Never allow your stool to become hard or constipated !!!

I never used Vasoline -- I thought it was too messy but the best Ointment I have ever used was Medicone both the 1 for hemorrhoids and Dermal -- Either could be applied rectally. The Company is out of business now but you can buy the same formulars online through Bogard Drug.

It sticks like glue -- does not stain clothes or readily wash off and is very healing -- I think it contains 6 active ingredients. A tube last 10 years. And, it really does not take much when used both before a BM and after.

I wish you well~~~Harry

hi,

i just had a hemroidectomy with a relatively new staple technique last week. i went into the clinic on monday night, had the operation on tuesday morning under general anaesthetic and was allowed to go home on wednesday morning.

i had put off this operation for the last few years because i was terrified of the pain.

i just wanted to reassure any of you out there too scared like me... go to the doctor and get the operation done asap. you will feel much much better afterwards... even if it's uncomfortable for a couple of weeks...

i had the operation under general anaesthetic, so i was knocked out and felt really weird for two days afterwards...

to start with i was on a codeine/paracetemol 500 painkiller as well as taking a stool softener... at first, i was terrified of going to the toilet but what goes in has to come out...

after a check-up with the doctor on thursday, he switched me off the codeine (not necessary and makes you feel weird) to paracetemol 500 and metamizol which was much better...

on sunday i went to the toilet three times and omg what a relief...
finally it all came out and i didn't pass out and i felt so much better.
i also wanted to mention that i did that without painkillers, they really didn't make too much of a difference... and it was ok, the relief was worth it...

now it's monday, 6 days since the op and i can almost sit normally, but i spend most of the time lying because that's the most comfortable position. forget working for at least 2 weeks after the op, you're going to need all the strength you can get for yourself.. :)

now i've stopped taking painkillers and hope to be back at work next week.
so that's my story... two weeks off work, discomfort and pain but i like to think that we're never given more than we can handle... even when it seems hard to believe at the time...

i don't want to sound like a hero, i had 3 serious internal haemhhoroids removed and even though that was not so serious as some of you, it really is the best thing to get them sorted as soon as possible. it is not so bad like your mind can lead you to think...

i wish all of you the best and get well soon... :)

Pika

I thought at least they'll IV without BM for one week.

Why can't they give you some anaesthetic cream/gel to relief before and after the BM? Can you mix the anaesthetic cream with vaseline then apply around the anus?

I have few haemhhoroids. Now the Dr want to do a colonoscopy. Would she ask my permission to remove them? Or she can do it after I sleep without asking me? I don't want a surprise after I wake up! She told me it could poke a hole in the bowel then need a repair. Is that meant she will chop something deeply in my bowel and cause a hole? I'm very scare.......

hi pika,

don't be scared.
go to see your doctor and have it checked.
there are various stages 1-4 and according to which stage they are maybe you won't even need to have a serious operation...
but do go and see your doctor.
having the operation and then recovering is the best peace of mind i have had for years, even if it is uncomfortable at the moment.
relax, see your doctor, have an operation if necessary and i hope you will feel better soon... :)

Harry,

You said to "take a water fiber supplement and a stool softener and use an ointment. Never allow your stool to become hard or constipated !!!" for how long do I need to do these things...the rest of my life??? Please let me know what you think. I was someone who tended to be more on the diaherea side than constipated side before having this surgery. The reason I developed hemorrhoids was due to three pregnancies.

Also, my surgeon keeps telling me that I don't need to be applying anything topically to that area. But it sounds like I need to get something. I will look into getting those ointments if it will help my healing.

Harry, how long did it take for you to feel "normal" down in that area again?

Thanks,
ericollin

Harry

ericollin,
I think you should take a fiber suppement daily forever -- it is not only good for constipation but also loose stools.
It use to be called a "Bowel Regular"
The ointment and stoo softener should just be used until feel comfortable not using them.

To feel normal -- GOOD Question?? Everyone is so different -- I think because their surgery is different and we all eat differently -- with me it took almost 2 months.

God Bless~~~Harry

I went to work on Monday. It takes me about 3 hours after a BM to get over the burning sensation. I skipped my postop because I thought I could not take the doctor touching me. He actually called me on my cell to see how I was and said to take my time coming to see him as long as everything was ok. Tuesday, October 24th, I felt pretty good after my BM, no blood, and I thought I was getting better. Went to work. At around 10:30 I started feeling like I had to have another BM. I hoped it was gas and tried not to give in the feeling. By 10:45 I told everyone I had to go home to go to the bathroom. I drove 30 minutes from LA to Glendale, went home, hardly had time to put Vaseline on, and went. The pain of going twice in a few hours was excruciating. I ran to the tub, sat in there for 15 minutes, got redressed and went back to work. The pain lasted all evening and when I went this morning it was terrible. Felt like the week right after the surgery of oct. 13. I was really depressed today, and felt like I am back sliding instead of getting better. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out what I ate differently, how much water did I have. I started to try the new Fibersure made by Metamucil which you can mix into foods. I also take 3 Colace a day and Metamucil in the evening. This having your life revolve around your rear, and BMs is crazy. However, I know I never want to have to have this surgery ever again.

Harry

sarab,
You just have to be carefull when you have the Problem certainly not forever! But, that goes along with all of life!!

If you never want the surgery again then never but never allow your yourself to be constipated again. Straining down a BM is the biggest cause of hemorrhoid. And, lifting heavy objects is next.
I found taking a water soluble fiber supplement daily is the best.

But, for now you are doing the right thing-- the hot water is great!

God Bless~~~Harry

So, with the hemmroidectomy, do you have to apply dressings after the surgery? Or do you just let it air out? Is it hard to walk afterward?

Harry
10-26-2006, 10:41 AM
You don't put dressings on!!
Walking will get better-- just takes time.

JShanson and Ericollin, you had your procedures in September. Did you notice a change from the burning sensation after a BM to a pain that seems to be from scarring? It now seems that this scarring is making the hole much narrower and thereby causing more pain with defacation. I hope we can all feel really well by the holidays.

Sarab524,
All I know is there is still some pain having a BM. I still have some burning but I think I understand what you are saying about the scarring. I am also still having some bleeding with a BM but not much. I am at 5 weeks healing today. I was definitely hoping to feel much better than I am right now from this surgery.

If I could go back, I would not have had it done. I think living with the pain of hemorrhoids was easier than what this surgery has put me through. On top of that, I presently am dealing with being on a third course of antibiotics for a urinary tract infection that won't go away. I saw a urologist yesterday and he thinks I just need to be on a longer course of antibiotics. Please pray that that is all I need to get better in that department.

I highly agree with you about feeling better by the holidays. I am going to continue praying for all of us that we feel better real soon.
Healing thoughts go out to you,
ericollin

Ericollin That is so much to deal with. I sympathize with you. I hope you have someone to help you with the baby and also to help you around the house. Take care, and try to get the most rest possible. I hope you have a baby the sleeps most of the time.

Sara,
Little did I know that most surgeons lie about the recovery time for this surgery (including mine!)

How has work been for you? I can't imagine trying to work in the working world while healing from this.

WE WILL HEAL SOON!!!

I sit at computer all day, and try to get up, walk around for awhile everytime I am uncomfortable. Everyone feels sorry for me, but I know they have no clue what I am really going through. The good thing is that keeping busy helps to keep my mind off of the pain. The afternoons are better than the mornings, and the soreness is less. Now I'm worried that the large bulky stools I was having this week have turned into really narrow stools. They are still soft but wormy like. I'm scared the scar tissue is closing the anal area and it's too tight. I read someone had spoken about having to have the anal passage stretched. I definitely don't want that. I am trying to add more cereal, etc to see if I can improve the bulkiness.

ericollin
10-31-2006, 02:18 PM
Sara,
I too am worried about the bulkiness of my stool. I have stopped the stool softeners and have continued with the metamucil and extra fiber in my diet. What do you think is a normal size BM (like circumference)??? I asked Harry that question on another hemorrhoid thread but he hasn't had a chance to answer yet.
ericollin

sarab524

Well last week I had one that was about 3 inches in circumference. I thought that was good. Now these skinny ones had me worried this weekend that I had anal stenosis, and would need either dilation or further surgery to remove the scars. Everyday is different. Yesterday I felt like I had a ping pong ball up my rear. Today it is more like a marble. There is always pain after a bm. Sometimes blood, sometimes not. But definitely pain. How are you feeling now?

ericollin
10-31-2006, 11:11 PM
I don't know if I have had a stool of 3 inches. Now I am getting worried too with needing more bulk.

5 weeks was definitely a point where I began feeling somewhat better in healing from this surgery. However, I am not sure I am happy with how the healing looks when I use a mirror down there. I think I have a skin tag or small hemorrhoid that is external. My surgeon claims that it is just swelling and will go away but I am not convinced.

How many weeks are you now? How do you feel overall?

We will heal soon!!!

sarab524

I am 4 weeks from the first hemorrhoidectomy on Oct. 4, and Friday will be 3 weeks from the second which took place October 13, 2006. It's like one day you feel you are getting better, then you have a really hard bm, bleed more and feel like you are going backwards on the healing front. I am back to taking one vidodin around 10 a.m to get me over the pain after the bm. I increased the Colace to 4 a day, and I am taking a tablespoon of Metamucil in the evening. Plus sometimes add Fiber Sure to soup at lunch. Having high fiber cereal in the morning, and some bean soup, or lots of vegetables for dinner or lunch. Each day is different and its hard to figure out what you are doing wrong if the stools change. We would have to have the exact same meal every day and then try to change one thing at a time to see what affects us. This is going to be a long process. I just want to get to that place where you don't have to be scared to use the bathroom.

ericollin
11-07-2006, 09:26 AM
Sara,
I am right there with you about wanting to be at that place where you are not scared about going to the bathroom. I am still very worried about he consistancy of my stools. How have you been lately?

sarab524
11-09-2006, 03:54 PM
I am happy to report that I have been doing better. I was worried about the size of the stools but I think everything is fine now. I still have some pain with movements, but it passes fairly quickly. I am not doing the sitz baths anymore. I continue to feel soreness for a few hours after, but it is not the stinging pain that it was. So, I feel that I am making progress. I will continue the stool softners until I am completely healed, and then wean off of them. I have continued with high fiber cereal in the morning, and try to have at least a high fiber lunch or dinner. I have a large tablespoon of Metamucil each evening. I know I will continue to do everything I can to have good movements, and keep everything going smoothly. The one thing I am grateful for is that I always had chronic constipation, and used herbal laxative teas on a daily basis for years. I did not even think my body could have normal movements without it. Now by adding the Metamucil and higher fiber diet I know that is not true, and I can have a normal life.

I hope everything will go better for you too, Ericollin. Lets get our lives back before Thanksgiving.

Sara

My husband had two internal hemmorhoids removed via laser surgery two weeks ago today. His recovery has been painful but he has been seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and actually returned to work yesterday for 1/2 day. Today he is having alot more pain after his bowel movements than yesterday -- a bit of a burning sensation and some paint. His bowel movements have been soft thanks to a fiber diet and the Colace so there is no longer any constipation and he is not taking any pain relievers other than Advil.

My question is that he says that is feels bumpy down there. Last week I mentioned this to the surgeon and he said that he was scar tissue and swelling from the surgery. He didn't seem concerned and didn't ask to see John in his office.

Have you all experienced this? Does this bumpiness go away?

Thanks and good luck with your recoveries.

Karen
