Hello,
I was diagnosed with type 2 about 2 weeks ago. I am having a terrible time planning my meals. I have the diabetic diet plan from my doctor's office, but I find that I am hungry much of the time. I have not seen a nurtitionist yet, but I have an appointment in early November. I am eating the same things over and over. I fear eating the "wrong things". My blood sugar levels have come down tremendously and I am happy about that, but I am still missing my food. Any advice anyone?
Thanks,
Madison

Different people react differently to foods, so I recommend an experiment of slightly larger portions of your protein selection at each meal and test two hours after the meal to see if you can keep your BG at appropriate levels while helping to satisfy hunger. If you're missing "forbidden foods" you might try adding small portions of the forbidden treat at meal times and test two hours after to see how it impacted you. At some point, you have to begin experimenting and testing so you will know how your body reacts to different foods in different amounts. If your BG levels rise a little more than you'd like, try a short 30 minute walk afterwards. With Diabetes, lots of times it's a trade-off. If you'll exercise, you may be able to squeeze in that occasional piece of cake.

When hungry and it is not regular meal time, drink ice water.

To avoid temptation when in presence of food, keep an invisible zipper over mouth in closed position!! It helps. While you are thinking about keeping the zipper closed it takes your mind off of food temporarily. It worked for me and I lost 65 lbs.

Keeping celery sticks handy will help take care of the desire to chew.

It would be wise to test blood sugar level when you are real hungry, it could be that your blood sugar has taken a sudden drop, too low. If it is too low, eat a small snack, such as a cracker with peanutbutter, or not more than 15 carbs. If it is close to time for next meal, go ahead and eat the meal. Best to not let BS drop lower than 70.

When I'm hungry, I pop in a piece of sugar-free gum (like trident). Some people eat because they feel like chewing (like the previous poster stated) plus it can whiten your teeth!
