I have had a chronic cough for years and I am pretty sure it is related to GERD. I take 1 nexium a day and was recently scoped and the Dr. said all is well. He even suggested I cut back on Nexium. It went away about a yr or so ago when I first started Nexium but is now back and more annoying than ever. I recently had a heart cath and went without food a whole day and did not cough.:blob_fire So, that is why I feel certain it is GERD. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Anyone else have such a cough?

I think most of us have a cough. My problem isn't the cough it's the sore throat. If i can get rid of that then things wouldn't be so bad. But I always feel I have to cough I just try to force myself not to.

I don't get such a sore throat, I just cough so hard I get chest pains. That's why my dr. sent me for a heart cath. The heart is fine. Every test shows everything is fine. So.......what can it be?

Sandysoo- I am just asking if it is possible that u have sinus problems. I have had a chronic cough and was told that it is gerd related but after having a scope and finding that everything is normal I decidded to persue other options and went to see a pulmonary specialist the other day he thinks I have chronic sinusitis that causes severe post nasal drip that causes that terrible infection. If you have many sinus infections I would think about having a ct scan of the sinuses and see if thats what is causing ur cough.

I went to see my G.P. today for a cough and lots of mucous/sore throat. Found out from an x-ray that I have bronchitis. However, I also have GERD
and my G.P. said that the cough could be due to the GERD and to stay on my Achiphex for at least three weeks after re-starting it.

Sandysoo,
Gerd-related chronic cough is called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and it is treated differently than GERD. Standard protocol to treat LPR is 2 doses a day of a PPI, not the single dose that heartburn patients get. LPR patients do not and will not get better on 1 dose a day. Up your dosage to 2 pills (take them at the same time, in the morning) and give it 4 weeks. In all liklihood, if it is LPR, you'll feel better within a few days. I've been there.

Thanks for that info. I will try that. I really feel certain it is gerd but was having no results with nexium - even twice a day. I didn't stick with it very long though. I will try at least a month at twice a day.:)

I had chronic cough, kept being told allergies, post nasal drip, had ct scan of sinus's..nothing, my gp wanted me to go to pilmonary, and I decided to seek gastro insteas..,Sure enough LPR, and started 1 aciphex a day, helped, but still alot of coughing, convinced Dr to see if 2 a day would do better, sure enough, my life is back to mostly normal..I still cough, but nothing like before, if I eat especially chocolate, I cough right away.

I tried the 2 Nexium a day - no results. Went to Gastroenterologist. He sai if I took 2 Nexium a day and still cough the cough is not Gerd. Well, back to the drawing board. Also, it must not be LPR or Nexium would help that. Now I am beginning to think it is a combination of 2 things. Perhaps sinus drainage is the culprit. I tried Nasacort and nothing. I tried Claritan - again no help. I have one more idea, ClaritanD. I saw it on one of the boards here. I will try that. Anybody have any other ideas for PND?

I also have the Chronic cough...Mine started in May. I was on prevacid for 8 weeks and it did nothing for me. I switched to Nexium and it seemed to help for awhile. My cough went away for about 3 weeks which was wonderful, but it came back. I've had an endoscopy, came back normal, I've done breathing tests to check for asthma, came back normal. The only thing that stops my cough is oral steroids. I'm on a steroid inhaler now and that helps but again...cough won't completely go away. My husband has just been given some Aciphex samples so thought I'd give that a try for a few days. My pulmonologist also put me on Drixoral for sinus trouble. So far that doesn't really help the cough. It's so frustrating and I pray that I won't have this annoying, gagging, hacking cough for the rest of my life. I'm only 37 years old!! Sorry I don't have the answers for you, but it does help to know others are going through the same thing and we can understand each others frustrations! Good luck and keep looking for the right answer for you.

Hi I haven't been diagnosed with LPR but I sure have the symptoms... PND and such... although about the cough mine is like a cough that doesnt pull through.. you know like I constantly feel liek coughing but then nothing comes out... and what bothers me most is the feeling of ashtma... do you guys have that feeling too? could that be because of LPR too? Is it serious? I had asthma when I was young... but not since I was 7 years old...
and aswander... is it really better to take the PPIs at the same time? I am also on PPI twice agay... but then I take it one before breakfast and one before dinner... and I really dont feel any better,,...

Can you guys tell me where your cough comes from? I have had a chronic cough that is just a constant tickle in my throat. No burning there... just a dry tickle... and I'm clearing my throat a lot.
My chest and back also hurts... and this comes and goes, and gets better with (sorry, gross) burping.
Does anyone else experience this? I'm guessing it's acid reflux...
Sorry to hyjack this thread... just hoping to get in on the "cough" talk. Does anyone else have this tickle cough?

I do, but most of the time my cough feels like an asthma cough.. like you want to but then nothing comes out... and my chest feels so tight. My doc said its no asthma though as she can't hear any wheezing.
