Hi, I am new here. My name is Leah. My father, age 58, had a stroke on Mon., Sept. 25th. He had a Hemorrhagic Stroke - Intercerebral Hemmorage. He is STILL in ICU. I just need SOMETHING. The Drs/Nurses say "we just have to wait and see"...I'm hoping someone here can give me something.
What I understand is that my dad had the vein at the base of his neck burst due to hypertension. They can not operate on the blood clot due to the location, but they are draining spinal fluid from his brain. He is paralized on his right side. The first 2-3 days after his stroke he was able to move his left side and say simple words like "no" and "yes". He has since lost ALL of that. All he does is blankly stare at the tv, us, or at pictures of his granddaughters (my daughters) when I show them to him. His only response is to pain. His platlets are low due to ITP; he is not tolerating his feeding tube/not digesting property; he is have explosive & frequent bm's; and now today we learned that his kidneys are failing.
No one can give us the slightest prognosis for him and me and my 2 sisters are getting so depressed and frustrated. Can someone PLEASE give me something here - good or bad - I just need something.
TIA, Leah (arcticmomma)

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. I think it is a waiting game at this point for the clot to resolve, they are draining spinal fluid to relieve additional pressure in the brain. As far as the feeding tube is concerned, ask the nursing staff to consult with the dietician,it may be that the supplement they're giving him is not right for him. There is probably a supplement that will be better tolerated that will not give him the diarrhea, or they may need to slow down the feedings. It is common to have to switch supplements to one that the body can handle better. Kidney failure often happens when the body has recieved a major trauma but, it can resolve if and when he starts to improve. Keep talking to your Dad and encouraging him because I am sure he hears you all.
Best wishes to you and your family.
